The Abortion Study Group was formed by the Family Relations Committee to discuss the Yearly Meeting's position on abortion issues. It met monthly for two years, and wrote position papers supporting the pro-life and pro-choice points of view. Records include minutes, reports, correspondence, and miscellaneous papers.

Abstract:
The administrative structure of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting has been re-worked a number of times. This finding aid describes administrative records and office files, primarily from the early 20th century to the present -- from the time when the Hicksite and Orthodox Yearly Meetings first began to employ paid staff to handle administrative matters. Today these functions are grouped under the auspices of General Services. This finding aid also describes the records of the General Secretaries of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting from 1967 to 1996.

Abstract:
The Church Unity Committee was composed of a small group of members-at-large appointed by the Yearly Meeting and those Friends who served "in any official capacity as representatives of this Yearly Meeting on State, National, or World Councils of Churches." It had originally been appointed by the Orthodox branch to coordinate ecumenical contacts. The Committee was laid down by Representative Meeting in 1973.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Committee on the Civil Rights of Homosexuals (1972-1987), 1975-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1972, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting appointed a Committee on Homosexuality under the Meeting for Social Concerns to work for the assurance of civil rights for homosexuals. In December of 1975, after the Meeting for Social Concerns was laid down and Yearly Meeting restructured, it was decided that there should be a subcommittee of the Family Relations Committee on homosexuality and a Committee for the Civil Rights of Homosexuals under the Testimonies/Concerns section of Yearly Meeting; the two groups met jointly. In 1987, the Committee on Civil Rights for Homosexuals decided to lay itself down; the Subcommittee on Homosexuality continued as part of the Family Relations Committee. Includes records of the Committee on Civil Rights for Homosexuals, 1975-1987.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Friends Conflict Resolution Programs and Friends Suburban Project (1977-1998), 1969-1998 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Friends Conflict Resolution Programs of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, part of the Friends Suburban Project from 1977 to 1983, began as an attempt to utilize Quaker insights to address and solve disputes in local communities. Initially named the Friends Mediation Service, the Friends Conflict Resolution Programs acquired its current title in 1991. Its mediators work with both Quaker and non-Quaker organizations and communities and have published two manuals, The Mediator's Handbook (1982) and Peacemaking In Your Neighborhood (1986). In 1998, at the time of the reorganization of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the Friends Conflict Resolution Programs were placed under the Peace and Concerns Standing Committee.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Economic Development Fund for Disadvantaged Minority Groups (Working Party on Racism) (1970-1976), 1968-1978 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The 1970 Working Party was appointed in the spring of 1970 to examine racism within Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. The Working Party issued a Preamble in June which in turn was the impetus for the establishment of the Economic Development Fund for Disadvantaged Minority Groups in March of 1971. The objective of the fund was to make "substantial resources available to projects which may be expected to result primarily in the development of growth, self-sufficiency, and economic independence of persons who are within a currently disadvantaged minority group." Operations of the Fund were laid down in 10mo 1976 because of lack of resources.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Nonviolence and Children Committee (1970-2015), 1970-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Since its inception in 1973, the Non-Violence and Children Committee (NVC) has explored the values, skills, and supports which enable children to develop powerful, nonviolent responses to violence. They work with Monthly Meetings, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Friends' and non-Quaker schools, the wider community and within their own committee, to support nonviolent approaches to conflict and differences, and to nurture children in the ways of peacemaking. The committee organizes and often facilitates workshops on topics pertinent to their cause and engages in work sessions to generate approaches to be shared with others. In keeping with the structural changes of the Yearly Meeting in 1998, the members of the Nonviolence and Children Committee reformed themselves into the Nonviolence and Children Concerns Group under the jurisdiction of the Standing Committee on Education.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Social Order Committee and its predecessors (1917-1969), 1917-1969 (inclusive)

Abstract:
A Social Order Committee was established by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) in 1917 to "consider the part which the Religious Society of Friends should take in the present day application of efforts to promote the Kingdom of God on Earth, particularly as it relates to social, political, and industrial conditions." In 1927 it began to more formally cooperate with a similar committee of the Hicksite Yearly Meeting in much of its work; the two shared a Secretary, David S. Richie, after 1939. In 1948 the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings formed a joint Social Order Committee. It was absorbed into the Meeting for Social Concerns in 1969-70.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Committee on the United Nations (1974-2015), 1974-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Committee on the United Nations was formed at the beginning of 1974 to “create, among Friends and people within the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting area generally, greater support for the UN and stronger concern for the problems the UN was designed to meet.” It began as a subcommittee of the Peace Committee, but in 1982 was made into a full committee. The committee published a newsletter, made presentations to schools and churches, and sponsored the Model UN Convention for Friends Schools. As an organization with non-governmental status (NGO) to the UN Department of Public Information, representatives from the group were able to provide a great deal of information about UN issues to Philadelphia-area Quakers. Under the reorganization of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in 1998, the Committee on the United Nations was renamed the United Nations Working Group under the Peace and Concerns Standing Committee.

The Weekend Workcamps Program originated on the eve of World War II. It provides volunteers and opportunity to work in an inner city community, interact with neighbors, and dialog on peace and justice issues. Today the Friends' Workcamp Program operates under the auspices of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting's Standing Committee on Peace and Concerns. Records include minutes, reports, project files, correspondence, and other records from 1942 to the present.
