Overview and metadata sections

A Coordinating Committee on Civil Liberties was appointed by both PYM in 1954. The following year, the reunited Yearly Meeting approved the creation of a regular Committee on Civil Liberties "to activate anew our ancient testimony." In a report to Yearly Meeting in 1958, Allen S. Olmsted, clerk, restated its three primary purposes, viz. (1) To relieve the suffering of those whose civil liberties have been infringed; (2) to bear witness to Friends' principles of civil liberty to those in positions of power; (3) to assist Friends in reaching a deeper understanding and appreciation of the place which individual freedoms have had throughout our history as a religious society," with particular emphasis on the third. The Committee was laid down in 1964, due to reduced activity, and its continuing concern for the abolition of capital punishment was referred to Representative Meeting.

Minutes of the Committee on Civil Liberties, 1956-1959. Also includes bibliographies, correspondence, 1956 legal opinion (copy) on Pupil Assignment Law, memoranda, publicity and news releases, draft statement (copy) on Friends and the Use of the 5th Amendment, and printed report (1956).
