Abstract:

New York Yearly Meeting was set off from New England Yearly Meeting in 1695, with Flushing its only constituent monthly meeting. It first held business in 1696 and expanded throughout the 18th century.

The 1750s were an initial period of reform: the first written Discipline dates to 1755 and a Meeting for Sufferings (to handle the business of the Yearly Meeting when not in session) began to be held quarterly in 1758.

New York Yearly Meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches during the 1828 sessions, following nearly twenty years of growing division among Friends in the United States. The Separation also led to nearly every constituent meeting also dividing and significant disputes related to funds, membership, and property.

From the Hicksite New York Yearly Meeting came the 1834 setting off of constituent meetings in Canada and Upper New York as Genesee Yearly Meeting. An additional schism occurred in 1846, sometimes called the Progressive Separation, with Congregational Quakers in Marlborough ultimately forming the Friends of Human Progress. The Hicksite Yearly Meeting was part of the establishment of Friends General Conference in 1900.

The Orthodox New York Yearly Meeting had several fractures: in 1847 several of its Quarterly Meetings divided following the Gurneyite/Wilburite schism in New England (forming the New York Yearly Meeting at Poplar Ridge), which later divided again into Otisite and Kingite factions. The Orthodox Yearly Meeting also set off its Canadian constituents as Canada Yearly Meeting in 1867. The Orthodox Yearly Meeting was part of the establishment of the Five Years Meeting (now Friends United Meeting) in 1902.

The two New York Yearly Meetings remained separate until their official reunification in 1955. But the Yearly Meetings began operating formal joint committees for various functions starting in 1904, and by 1943 the Joint Committee on Affiliated Service made a formal recommendation for reunion. The first joint annual sessions were held in 1947 (following separate business sessions for each) and its first united annual session in 1955. NYYM is affiliated both with Friends General Conference and Friends United Meeting.

After the official reunification in 1955, New York Yearly Meeting held its Annual Sessions through summer 2007 (with additional representative sessions in fall and spring). Beginning with Fall 2007 Sessions, New York Yearly Meeting now meets in session three times a year.

Scope and Contents

Meeting for Sufferings was established in 1758 and was held quarterly to represent and hold any business of the Yearly Meeting while it was not in session. Its early duties included overseeing the Society's publications. In 1828, the Meeting for Sufferings split along the Hicksite/Orthodox lines, continuing in two separate committees. Both Committees changed their names to Representative Committee, in 1869 and 1859, respectively. The Orthodox Yearly Meeting changed the name of its Representative Meeting to Permanent Board in 1902 to conform to the Uniform Discipline. Reunited in 1955 as the Representative Committee (see 6/2/1955 minutes), the committee met biannually until transitioning to seasonal sessions in fall 2007.

Biographical / Historical

Starting in 1828 with a list of members in each monthly meeting, at the time of the Hicksite/Orthodox Separation, the Directory or Membership list of the Yearly Meeting is used to keep record of numbers of members, and to give a brief statement on date of formation, and times each meeting gathers. This list continued separately throughout the split and has come together in the reunification. It continues to be updated, but the last date of publication for a full Directory of the New York Yearly Meeting Friends as of yet is 1970. The Hicksites published a new directory approximately every 5 years. Post reunification, it was published every 2-3 years.

Scope and Contents

This book is an attempt to make a comprehensive list of all Quakers at the time of the Separation, as minuted by the Orthodox Meeting for Sufferings in 1829 9mo 7: "directing the subordinate Meetings to take an accurate account of the number of persons composing the several Meetings at the time of the Hicksite separation, making a list of the names of all, adults and minors."

The Committee on Enumeration did so "except those from Easton and Troy Monthly Meetings, and some of the Adults in the compass of Duanesburg Quarterly."

The register lists Friends on one part and Hicksites or Seceders or Separatists on the other. A summary note by William Wood was added in 1875 explaining the source and scope of the project.

This is a typewritten copy of RG2/NYy/076 1.1 (the list of both Hicksite and Orthodox members made by the Orthodox Committee on Enumeration in 1829-1831).

It was one of three created in 1904 by John Cox, Jr. for the Hicksite New York Yearly Meeting, and the 1904 note reports that the second copy was placed in the New-York Historical Society, and a later note saying the third copy was sold to the New York Public Library in 1936.

Biographical / Historical

The book of Discipline was used as a guide for the Religious Society of Friends; rules to be followed by its members. The first published edition of the New York Yearly Meeting Discipline was in 1800, and was soon followed by a revision edition in 1810. The last edition before the Orthodox and Hicksite split was in 1826. The Hicksites published Disciplines from 1830 to 1950; the Orthodox published Disciplines from 1859 to 1930. The first Discipline published post reunification was also the first edition with its new name, Faith and Practice, in 1956. It continues to be published today.

Biographical / Historical

Established by 1965, the Handbook Committee had the duty of giving details to officers of the Yearly Meeting, to describe the function and description of Yearly Meeting committees, and to have information of the funds of the Yearly Meeting. It had an informal predecessor to study the Yearly Meeting Committees. It was laid down by the end of 1984.
