Overview and metadata sections
Newtown Preparative Meeting (Delaware County, Pa.) was established by 1702. In 1706, Newtown was transferred from Radnor Monthly Meeting to Chester Monthly Meeting. In 1722, it became part of Goshen Monthly Meeting. In 1827, at the time of the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Newtown Preparative Meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches. The Orthodox branch was discontinued in 1828.
Newtown Preparative Meeting (Hicksite) was established as Newtown Square Monthly Meeting in 1939 at the dissolution of the original Goshen Monthly Meeting (Hicksite).
Records of the Hicksite meeting include: minutes of the men's meeting and later, of joint sessions with women, 1840-1935; women's minutes, 1847-1897; treasurer's account book, 1912-1939; burial vault account book, 1849-1879; deeds and declarations of trust, 1708-1832; miscellaneous financial accounts, 1790-1791 and n.d.

Collection Inventory
Official records of proceedings kept for all Quaker business meetings. Only Quakers could participate. It has responsibility for care of members, authorizes removals and marriages, maintains discipline, considers the queries, manages meeting property, fosters social concerns, and reports regularly to the quarterly meeting. Beginning at the end of the 19th century, men and women ceased to hold separate business meetings, meeting instead in joint session.
Minutes of the men's meeting and later, of joint sesions with women as follows: 1840-1876; 1876-1909; 1909-1925; 1925-1935. Volumes are 1.1 1840-1876, 1.2 1876-1909, 1.3 1909-1925, 1.4 1925-1935.
Joint sessions with women began in 1897.
