Wilhelm Söllmann Papers, 1901-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Friedrich Wilhelm Sollmann (1881-1951), German labor leader, journalist, and Reichminister. Exiled from Germany in 1933, Sollmann sought refuge in the United States and eventually became an American citizen, adopting William F. Sollmann as his preferred form of address. Sollmann was a member of the German delegation to the Versailles Peace Treaty conference and he served as a representative to the Constitutional National Assembly at Weimar. In 1920 Sollmann was elected to the first of his eight terms in the Reichstag where he was to be a prominent member of the committee on foreign affairs. Sollmann's career as a lecturer and advisor on Germany and international affairs commenced in 1937 and continued until the time of his death.

Another Mother for Peace was a women's peace group born from the antipathy to the war in Vietnam, based in Los Angeles, California. The stated purpose of this non-partison, non-profit organization was "to educate women to take an active role in eliminating war as a means of solving disputes between nations, people and ideologies." AMP closed its offices in January 1986.

Abstract:
Henry J. Cadbury (1883-1974) was a distinguished Biblical scholar, teacher, and a member of the Society of Friends. Cadbury was one of the founders of the American Friends Service Committee. He served as its chairman from both 1928 to 1934 and again from 1944 to 1960. Cadbury supervised famine relief both in the United States and in Europe.

The Washington, D.C. office opened 1969 and focused on news of Indochina, Southeast and East Asia, and Latin America. DNSI suspended operations March 1973.

Lawrence Scott was a construction engineer, Baptist clergyman, and Quaker activist. He worked as an activist against the testing of nuclear weapons and biological weapons research. He was the supervisor for the Friends Mississippi Project, project director of the Appeal and Vigil at Fort Detrick in Maryland, executive secretary of the Peace Action Center and a founder of A Quaker Action Group.

Peoples Mandate to Governments to End War was an international campaign begun on September 6, 1935, by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom to express such overwhelming opposition to war that governments would not dare resort to it as a means of solving disputes between nations. By the end of the decade the Peoples Mandate became an independent organization, headed by Mabel Vernon, and focused on peace and connections between women and women's organizations in the Americas.

Young Friends of North America Committee on Conscription Records, 1968-1971 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Young Friends of North America, an open fellowship of Friends between the ages of 18 and 30, established a Committee on Conscription in the fall of 1968 to facilitate communication among Friends who were involved with draft resistance. The Committee, chaired by C.O. Peter Blood, collected information from members of the Religious Society of Friends who had refused to cooperate with conscription since the 1940s, as well as Friends who were currently imprisoned for draft resistance. Besides Peter Blood, David Morrison and Gary Stewart also seemed to have been involved in keeping the Committee active.

Abstract:
[Anna] Ruth Fry was an activist and a writer born into a prominent Quaker family in England. From 1914-1924, she served as general secretary of the Friends Relief Commission, which provided help for refugees and others ravaged by World War I. Fry wrote about her experiences in A Quaker Adventure (1926). She was also the first chairman of the Russian Famine Relief Fund in 1921. Fry went on to write numerous books, pamphlets and tracts, on a variety of Quaker and peace topics. She died on April 26, 1962.

These included magazine advertising and radio programming to counteract the "artificial glories of war."

The NGO Committee on Disarmament was established in June 1973 by a group of international NGOs (non-governmental organizations). The organization had petitioned the New York Bureau of the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Status with the U.N. Economic and Social Council to form a Committee on Disarmament at U.N. headquarters. This new Committee would be parallel to the Special NGO Committee on Disarmament in Geneva, Switzerland.

The U.S. Peace Council National Founding Conference was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, November 9-11, 1979. The organization was headquartered in New York, New York until 1990, then moved to Philadelphia. It was formed as a "peace and solidarity network" and published the periodical Peace and Solidarity. The U.S. Peace Council was affiliated with the World Peace Council, headquartered in Helsinki, Finland. ThePhiladelphia national headquarters closed in 1992, but some operations were continued (1993- ) by the Michigan chapter.

Established in 1984 to strengthen peace work among Unitarian Universalists and interfaith communities, the goup was especially concerned with the international arms race and nuclear proliferation. Directors included Stephen M. Shick, Carol Powers, Stephanie Nichols. The headquarters were in Philadelphia, Pa. and sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association. Unitarian Universalist Peace Fellowship, Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office, Unitarian Universalist Women's Federation, and the International Association for Religious Freedom; published two periodicals, Peace Network News and Nuclear Free Zone News; organized a Rapid Action Alert network to communicate concerns to elected representatives; ceased operations on November 30, 1991.

The Exploratory Project on the Conditions of Peace, founded by W. H. Ferry, was established at Boston College in 1987 to explore the conditions for a sustainable peace. After relocating to Washington, D.C., the organization ceased operation 1990 or 1991.

It grew to include the Lawyers Alliance for Nuclear Arms Control, Physicians for Social Responsibility, the Union of Concerned Scientists, Architects, Designers, Planners for Social Responsibility, Psychologists for Social Responsibiity, High Technology Professionals for Peace, and Citizens Against Nuclear War, and Business Executives for Nuclear Age Concerns. It was formed as a lobbying and educational group to promote effective arms control legislation.

Founded in 1961 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by a group of physicians. PSR is an organization, and association of doctors concerned with the challenge of the nuclear age: "man's scientific knowledge now provides an unprecedented opportunity for medical and social advance; yet thermonuclear war poses a supreme threat to the health and survival of mankind." Since prevention is the only effective remedy, and therapy, these physicians are attempting to explore a new area of preventive medicine: the prevention of nuclear war. Their aims are to "provide for the medical community the scientific data on which political decisions must in part be based; to alert physicians to the dangerous implication of the arms race; to involve physicians in serious exploration of peaceful alternatives..."

Holdings in Tamiment Library: about half the records of the New York Bureau of Legal Advice consist of case histories pertaining to selective service exemption, draft evasion, conscientious objector status, military imprisonment, military discharge, desertion, amnesty, civil liberties and deportations. One third of the collection consists of office files, administrative reports and correspondence, including extensive fundraising correspondence. The remainder of the collection is made up of press releases and newspaper clippings. Correspondents include Mary Beard, Sarah N. Abstract:
Helen Mears was a writer and journalist, especially interested in Japan and Asia. Mears first traveled to China in 1925 and ten years later Mears spent nine months in Japan. Out of the trip to Japan she published two books and a series of essays that appeared in The New Yorker. Mears traveled throughout Asia, the Soviet Union, Europe, and parts of South America. After World War II Mears traveled again to Japan served in an official capacity as a member of the U.S. labor advisory committee. From the 1950s through the 1960s Mears wrote occasional articles on southeast Asia, critiquing European and U.S. involvement there. Mears was a board member of the War Resisters League in the 1950s and worked against the H-Bomb. Helen Mears published several books on Japan. These include: Mirror for Americans, Japan, Boston : Houghton Mifflin Co., 1948; Year of the Wild Boar: an American Woman in Japan in 1947.

Abstract:
Greenham Women Against Cruise Missiles was organized in 1983 by a group of women who were part of the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp in Great Britain. Several activists at Greenham organized Greenham Women Against Cruise Missiles, which sought to use the U.S. legal system to challenge the right of the U.S. government to deploy nuclear missiles on foreign soil. Although the suit was unsuccessful, a group of Greenham women traveled around the United States speaking out about the growing objections in the international community to the ongoing escalation of the nuclear arms race.

Robert W. Lentz was a civil rights lawyer, originally from West Chester Pennsylvania. He worked with the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) in Mississippi; for two weeks in the summer of 1964, and served as a lawyer to aid volunteers who were jailed in Mississippi for their civil rights efforts. Lentz returned to Mississippi in November 1966 to help with voter rights in the general election.

American Civil Liberties Union: National Committee on Conscientious Objectors Records, 1940-1946 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The roots of the NCCO began shortly after conscription in WWII was instituted. Little is known about the New York Office of the NCCO. It was headquartered at 31 Union Square West in New York City (NY) where the ACLU had its offices, and was likely set up in 1940, under the chairmanship of Norman Angell, and stayed in existence through 1945. In Washington (DC), the Temporary Committee for Legal Aid to Conscientious Objectors was formed in 1940. R. Boland Brooks had gone to NSBRO (National Service Board for Conscientious Objectors) under the sponsorship of this committee. In 1942, George Reeves and R. Boland Brooks left their posts at the National Service Board for Conscientious Objectors. The relationship of Brooks and the Legal Aid Committee was re-established after the resignations from NSBRO. Reorganizing as Legal Service to Conscientious Objectors, the Committee agreed to sponsor a Washington service bureau, with Brooks as director and Reeves as assistant director.
