Overview and metadata sections
Begun in 1971 as the World Peace Tax Fund and founded in Ann Arbor, Michigan, by David Bassett and others. The NCPTF to provide a means whereby a taxpayer conscientiously opposed to any participation in war could have his or her income, estate, and gift tax payments spent for non-military purposes only; This plan was drafted into formal legislation and introduced into the House of Representatives by Representative Ron Dellums of California on April 15, 1972, and to the Senate by Mark Hatfield in 1977. Iinitially this legislation was called the World Peace Tax Fund Bill, and later renamed the U.S. Peace Tax Fund Bill. The national office moved to Washington D.C. in 1975 and changed its name to National Council for a World Peace Tax Fund. The organization later was renamed as the National Campaign for a World Peace Tax Fund (1983), and changed once more to the National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund in 1984 or 1985. In 1985 a separate organization called the Peace Tax Foundation was incorporated to carry out educational and research functions dealing with conscience which the Campaign had previously been handling.

Material in this collection is arranged by type or topic: administrative records, boards and committees, staff, literature produced, programmatic efforts, events, Peace Tax Foundation, and, tax resistance by individuals and groups (in geographical order).

Gift of National Campaign for a Peace Tax Fund, 1990 [Acc. 90A-090]; 1994 [Acc. 94A-034]; 2005 [Acc. 05A-055]; 2013 [Acc. 2013-002]. Some files from Acc. 2018-056 (DG 186: National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee Records) were removed to this collection in 2019.
This collection was processed in the summer of 2019 and the finding aid created by Anne Yoder (Archivist), December 2019. It is expected that more files will be received in 2020 or soon thereafter. Some files, including the correspondence of/by constituents, were removed from DG 186 (National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee Records) to this collection in 2019.
Small poster "Peace Is Always in Season" was removed to the Oversize Documents Collection.
