Abstract:
The collection presents a detailed picture of several generations of Smiths, Masons and Ewings -Philadelphia families, at least some of whom were Quakers, portraying their daily lives and concerns. The primary authors are Edith Mason Smith (1857-1944) and her husband, Joshua Cowgill Smith (1857-1911), their children Elizabeth Newlin Smith (1884-1977) and her husband J.M. Sharpless Ewing ( - 1960), Mildred Smith (1888-1973) and Jean Smith (1883-1966). The concentration of the collection is the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.

The Aimwell School in Philadelphia was founded in 1796 by Anne Parrish (1760-1800) for the purpose of providing "a good English education" in the primary and grammar grades for underprivileged girls. Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs, 1758-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Records deal with the work of Friends in running mission stations in Oklahoma to the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma (Bah Kho-je), the Modoc Nation, the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma, the Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Indians, the Shawnee Tribe, the Osage Nation (Wahzhazhe) and other Native American peoples. Letters from superintendents and missionaries in the field describe the difficulties and experiences of Friends in their work. Topics discussed include attempts to Christianize Native Americans, improve living conditions, Native American education, use of peyote and alcohol, disease, Native American dances, conflicts with other religious denominations, protection of Native Americans from schemes and abuses.

Abstract:
Rayner W. Kelsey (1879-1934) was professor of history at Haverford College (1909-1934). In 1922 he was named curator of the Quaker collection at Haverford. Kelsey was the author of Friends and the Indians (1917) and editor of the journal of Theophile Cazenove (1740-1811). This collection is comprised of notes, extracts and transcripts from primary and secondary sources related to American colonial history and Pennsylvania agricultural history of the colonial and early Federal periods. Includes 2 file card boxes of notes, arranged by topic by Kelsey, of his research on PA agricultural history. Also notes, extracts and transcripts of letters and documents (petitions, proclamations, etc.) relating to British colonial tea and sugar trade, also the Stamp act of 1765; includes transcripts of letters (1797-1799) of Theophile Cazenove related to Holland Land Company transactions.

Morris-Shinn-Maier collection, 1720-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection spans approximately 200 years, from the late 1700s to the late 1900s, and five generations of the Morris-Shinn-Maier family, which are traced through matrilineal and patrilineal lines. They were prominent Quaker businessmen and lawyers in the Philadelphia area, and a large portion of the collection is dedicated to their legal and business material, as well as a great deal of very detailed financial material. There is also a quantity of personal material, namely diaries and correspondence, and material from philanthropic work done by later generations. Principal individuals include Paul David Irwin Maier, William Morris Maier, Anna Shinn Maier, Levi Morris and Naomi McClenachan Morris. A genealogical chart done by a Haverford student while processing the collection has been printed out and is included in the box 1191 (ovs).

Sydney Hunt collection, 1930-2004 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of 101 glass lantern slides, taken by Sydney Hunt and C. (Khalil) Raad in the 1930s in Palestine. Sydney Hunt traveled through Palestine and Germany in the 1920s. He purchased some of the slides from Raad, a professional photographer, and took others himself. Also included in this collection is a draft of Hunt's book The Joyful Traveler: Wanderings of Sydney Hunt, 1932-1934, with hand corrections. Hunt had written this manuscript in the 1930s, but by the time he had finished, publishers were not interested in happy recollections about Germany. It was not published, therefore, until 2003. Hunt used a number of the slides and other images in this collection to illustrate the book once it was published.

This collection traces several generations of the Quaker Taylor family, but centers on Francis R. Taylor (1884-1947) and George Washington Taylor (1803-1891). The former was an attorney and collector of information about his own and related families, as well as local historical information. The latter, who ran a free produce store in Philadelphia in the period before the American Civil War, was connected through his interests in free labor to many correspondents.

Abstract:
The Vaux family was deeply involved with Quaker and Native American affairs throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. George Vaux, Sr. was involved in Quaker activity through the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and other Quaker meetings throughout the world (including Antigua and London). Both George Vaux, Jr. and Mary Morris Vaux Walcott, his sister, served as commissioners for the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners. This organization was established by the United States Congress in 1869 to watch over federal policies regarding Native Americans and to make certain that treaty obligations were fulfilled, especially in reference to supply deliveries. George Vaux, III also worked as the treasurer of the Indian Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Within the collection are letters, reports, photographs, land surveys, and administrative records. At that time, the Rhoads, Gibbons and Wistar families began corresponding, the result being an outstanding collection illustrating family support, friendship and love. Abstract:
Douglas and Dorothy Steere were prominent figures of the Quaker movement in the twentieth century, and deeply committed to the causes of peace and spiritual enrichment. This commitment is evident in their involvement with Quaker-led relief work after World War II, Quaker spiritual retreats, international diplomacy, and Dorothy's work with the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Douglas taught philosophy at several institutions including Haverford College, and published extensively on topics in Quaker philosophy and history. This collection contains considerable material related to Douglas's work as a writer, professor, and diplomat. Given his role as a distinguished figure within 20th century Quakerism, this material is also relevant to researchers interested in recent Quaker history as a whole. There is also some fascinating material produced and collected by Dorothy related to the Civil Rights movement, including a letter from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Abstract:
The Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles family papers house the correspondence of a Quaker family who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Woodbury, New Jersey; Wilmington, Delaware; and other surrounding areas from approximately 1840 to 1882. A majority of the letters were written to or by Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles; her husband, John Smith Hilles; and other Tatum or Hilles family members. There is a small sampling of assorted family papers, dating from 1825 to 1901. Included, among other items, are school report cards of William Samuel Hilles from Haverford College and an 1834 memoir of Anne Cooper Tatum, Sarah Hilles' mother. Abstract:
This collection is comprised primarily of the original, handwritten diary of Alice Jones, and a photocopy of the original. Diary entries discuss the history of the Friends School in Ramallah, Palestine, religious reflection and discussions concerning the divides between Muslims, Jews, and Christians in Palestine, and discussions concerning the politics within Palestine. Jones also provides descriptions of the children she teaches at the school. In addition to the Jones's diary, the collection includes a single folder of related materials, which includes a certificate from the American Red Cross in Palestine thanking Jones for her service during World War I, four pages of typed diary entries dated 1946, and a typed poem, which is undated.

The scrapbook is comprised of clippings of an article on the Christiana Riot, published in 1910 by the Atlantic Monthly, but originally published in 1866. The article, "The Freedman's Story," was written by William Parker, a formerly enslaved person who escaped slavery and became an abolitionist and activist in Pennsylvania. He was a key actor in the Christiana Riot, and the article describes his memory of the event. It is not known who compiled the scrapbook.

The papers of Hugh Borton, Haverford's president from 1957 to 1967, are arranged in three series. The Alphabetical series consists of a small and random selection of his office files. They help to document Borton's efforts to move the college to an expanded student body, his support of academic freedom from government intrusions, and a growing cooperative program with Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges. The Affiliations series relate to his work with U.S.-Asian, particularly U.S.-Japanese, organizations, the Society of Friends, and higher education groups. Abstract:
Gilbert Fowler White's papers are sparse and provide little documentation of what was a very popular presidency. Their transfer to the archives appears to have been totally random, with a portion found as part of a transfer of Provost records. They have been placed in one alphabetical arrangement. There is some information on the efforts for Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Swarthmore cooperation, the response to the Korean War, and curriculum considerations. Correspondence on White's appointment and his resignation and the letters of appreciation written for the Haverford News give some indications of the College community's expectations for his presidency and his success in meeting those expectations. The texts and notes for his speeches to Haverford audiences, Quaker schools and organizations, government, civic, and professional groups do not provide additional documentation of his administration at Haverford, but do reveal his observations on education, world affairs, natural...(see more)

This is a small group of papers, 1940-1945, primarily relating to Haverford President Felix M. Morley's efforts to balance college support of the war without militarization. A portion of the files are from the files of Board member J. Henry Scattergood. Both the Morley and Scattergood material consist primarily of correspondence on bringing government subsidized non-combatant units to Haverford, as well as Haverford's own Relief and Reconstruction program. There is some information on his appointment and resignation as College president and some post-presidential correspondence.
