Historical Note

Woodside Cottage is the oldest building on Haverford's campus, dating to the 1820s, well before the school's founding in 1833. While it was originally built as a farmhouse and continued to be used domestically as the residence for Haverford professors, it was repurposed in the 20th century as an educational space and now hosts the English department. In contrast to its American Vernacular architecture, a Victorian addition was added onto Woodside's west side by Professor Thomas Chase in the 1880s.

Archival Resource Key. Egyptienne Luxury Haverford College tobacco silk, ca. 1910s.
Box 20
Scope and Contents

This item is a single piece of tobacco silk emblazoned with the Haverford College seal and inscribed with "Haverford" in pennant-type font. The manufacturing location is listed at the top of the silk, described as "Factory No. 7, 3rd District State, NY." The manufacturer, Egyptienne Luxury, is written on the bottom. Though the stitches on either side of the silk remain intact, the top and bottom have begun to fray. This silk originated from a limited run of college silks (both large and small), issued by the Egyptienne Luxury Tobacco Company. Other schools in this run included Swarthmore, Johns Hopkins, Hamilton and state universities, all totaling 148 colleges.

Historical Note

Tobacco silks originated from the long-standing tradition of advertisements in tobacco products. Prior to the silks, other textiles were used to give cigarettes and cigars a premium look and feel. The tobacco silk, a small piece of cloth, was included in tobacco boxes as a purely decorative addition, it served no functional purpose. Many silks were part of larger themed collections, such as famous athletes or colleges, pushing the consumer to collect all of a certain kind.
