Abstract:

Excerpts from Ella Bowles Newlin's travel journal from her trip with her husband from Iowa to England, Norway, and Germany. Entries describe the accommodations on board, Newlin's time in England, the voyage to Norway, travel within Norway, and the cultural differences between America and Norway.

Ella Bowles Newlin (1858-1950) was a Quaker minister from Iowa. Newlin was born in Marion, Indiana, on February 11, 1858, the daughter of Ephraim Bowles and Elizabeth Epperson. In 1881, she married Abner Lewis Newlin, and the couple had five children together: Louanna Newlin (1882-1882), Roy Levi Newlin (1884-1980), Jay Joel Newlin (1886-1971), Edith Newlin (1887-1969), and Mary Ella Newlin (1889-1960). Newlin was recorded a Quaker Minister in 1901. She died on June 30, 1950, in Dallas, Iowa.

This collection is comprised of the typed transcript of excerpts from Ella Bowles Newlin's travel journal from her trip with her husband from Iowa to England, Norway, and Germany. The transcript was prepared by Newlin's granddaughter, Vesta Newlin Hansen. Newlin's trip began with her taking a train from her home in Iowa to Philadelphia, where she and her husband attended the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, after which the two traveled to New York, where they spent two weeks visiting friends. The couple then took the S.S. Carmina from New York to Liverpool. Entries describe the accommodations on board, Newlin's time in England, the voyage to Norway, and travel within Norway. Newlin often notes the cultural differences between America and Norway, notably the prevalence of smoking and drinking. She also describes attendance at Norwegian Quaker Meetings, temperance meetings, and Norway's recovery after World War I.
