Sydney Dix Strong Papers, 1890-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Sydney Dix Strong (1860-1938) was an outspoken pacifist and strong supporter of disarmament, war resistance, and organized labor. He was the pastor for churches in Ohio and Illinois and did settlement work in Chicago. For his peace stance made him unpopular during WWI and in Oct. 1917 he was expelled from membership in the Municipal League of Seattle because of a speech he had given before the National Council of Congregational Churches, in which he praised the I.W.W. (International Workers of the World). Strong published many articles and sermon series, as well as his book Rise of American Democracy in 1935, and from 1921-1938 was associate editor of Unity magazine. Other activities included a campaign to collect signatures for a "Peace Letter to the President" in 1926, while he was Secretary of the Seattle Peace League and of the Seattle group of Peacemakers; the development of a "2%" button, based on comments made by Albert Einstein that if 2% of those who were supposed to do...(see more)

Anti-Imperialist League Collected Records, 1899-1919 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Anti-Imperialist League was formed circa June 1898 to oppose the war of the United States with Spain over Cuba's fight for independence from Spanish rule. The United States also wished to expand its influence in the Carribean and across the Pacfic and so annexed the Philippine Islands and Puerto Rico. Eventually, the League grew into a bipartisan mass movement of some 30,000 members in 30 states. The Anti-Imperialist League continued to challenge American intervention abroad until 1920, but it was largely isolated from the peace movement and had lost most of its impact.

Abstract:
The collection consists of six items, four of which are booklets and two of which are sets of photos. The booklets include a handbook presented to freshmen in September 1936 by Haverford College's Student Association, of which Stephen Cary was a chairman; a booklet describing Haverford's aims and characteristics from 1879; the Haverford Athletic Annual Class book from 1900; and a booklet called "Continuation of Short History of '37" from 1942, which lists the members of the class of 1937 and their post-college accomplishments and paths. The photos in the collection are photos of Stephen Cary with various sports teams at Haverford in the late 1980s and early 1990s and a photo from a reunion of the class of 1937 taken in front of Roberts Hall, presumably 5 or 10 years after their graduation.

John Bach McMaster (1852-1932) was an American writer and professor best known for his landmark history of the United States, A History of the People of the United States, which appeared in eight volumes from 1883 to 1913. McMaster's historical technique was notable in its use of newspaper material and his insistence on providing social context from all classes, not simply the political leaders of the time. This collection contains correspondence, writings by McMaster, material used by McMaster in his research, and personal material, such as newspaper clippings of his life and work, testimonials by colleagues, and memorabilia.

Gibson for a biography of Horace Howard Furness, The Philadelphia Shakespeare Story: Horace Howard Furness and the Variorum Shakespeare, published in 1990. The bulk of this collection consists of photocopies of original nineteenth and early twentieth century documents made between roughly 1975 and 1985. This collection gathers hundreds of letters and articles that relate to H. H. Furness, from over fifty libraries and repositories, and illuminates Gibson's research and writing process. Furness (1833-1912) was a leading Shakespeare scholar, and thus some of the material pertains to the study of Elizabethan theater.

The H.H. Furness Memorial Library focuses on the study of Shakespeare and other Tudor and Stuart dramatists. Horace Howard Furness (1833-1912) and his son Horace Howard Furness Jr. (1865-1930) founded and edited the Variorum Shakespeare and their library was donated to the University of Pennsylvania in 1932. This collection contains personal correspondence to and from Rev. Isaac Taylor (1829–1901) was the canon of York as well as a philologist and toponymist. This collection contains manuscript copies of some of Taylor's best-known works, including Greeks and Goths (1879), The Alphabet (1883), and Origin of the Aryans (1890). Other titles included are Words and Places (1864), which first brought him to the attention of the public, and Names and Their Histories ([1898]).

Abstract:
Corneille McCarn Rucker, an aspiring poet, was raised in Nashville, Tennessee and Hawaii before attending Vanderbilt University. She was the first woman to publish in The Fugitive, an influential poetry journal. It appears that despite this success, Corneille, in general, had a difficult time publishing many of her poems. This collection documents the lively social life and literary aspirations of a well-educated young woman in the early 20th century. Corneille McCarn Rucker memorialized her life in an extremely narrative and vivid fashion through letters, diaries, writings, and scrapbooks.

Abstract:
Robert L. Sherman, born in 1866, was a playwright and a theater manager. A prolific author, he began writing plays for Alexander Byers and the Chicago Manuscript Company, a printing business that sold and rented play scripts to theater companies in the United States from 1895 until 1922. Alexander Byers acquired most of the plays he published by pirating them. This collection consists of 139 mimeograph versions of play scripts which were part of the inventory of the Chicago Manuscript Company.

Abstract:
This is an autograph collection compiled by Francis Campbell Macaulay. The collection is composed of letters by scientists, politicians, and men of letters, and fragments with signatures. The collection reflects Macaulay's interest in Italian literature, and includes letters from Ludovico Ariosto, Fortunato Cavazzeni Pederzini, and Alessandro Torri. Other notable autographs in the collection are those of Alexandre Dumas, Robert Morris, and Millard Fillmore. The collection also includes several letters to Macaulay regarding the Dante Society, and five volumes of Macaulay's notes for a vocabulary of the dialect of Nice.
