The Pennsylvania Association of Dental Surgeons was founded in 1845 in order to promote the professional development of dentists in the state, with a particular goal of improving dental education. For several years prior to its formation, informal meetings had been held in Philadelphia among a number of progressive dentists. Initially it was hoped to form a dental school in Philadelphia based on the dental college in Baltimore. The first meeting was held in Philadelphia on December 15, 1845 at the Philadelphia Museum at Ninth and Sansom Streets. In attendance were dentists from across the state – including Thomas W. Evans. The meeting resulted in the election of officers and members, establishment of educational criteria, and the drafting of by-laws. The association held regular meetings, and sponsored the efforts to establish the first dental school in Philadelphia.
The Pennsylvania Association of Dental Surgeons Records consists of a Memberships Dues Account Book for the period 1905 - 1919, Minutes Books for 1896-1906 and 1944 - 1949, Lists of Students for 1899-1909 and the banquet program for their fiftieth anniversary in 1895.

The Pennsylvania Association of Dental Surgeons Records was transferred to the University Archives from the School of Dental Medicine (Accession Number 2015:018, May 2015).
