Overview and metadata sections
"William Nicholson Taylor was born June 22, 1882 to Frank Hendrickson Taylor (1855-1943) and Rebecca "Bessie" Nicholson Taylor (1857-1944). William Taylor studied architecture at Harvard University and abroad and served in the United States Military from 1917-1919 during World War I, ultimately promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. After the war, William Taylor married Gertrude Christine Duret de Brie (1897-1983) and the couple moved to Paris.
William and Gertude Taylor had three children, Constance Alix (1921), Benjamin de Brie "Brie" (1923), and Marie-Celine "Mimi" (1925). The family lived both in France and in the United States. During World War II, both William Taylor and his son Benjamin de Brie served in the American military. William Taylor died in April of 1945 and was buried in Arlington Cemetery, later joined by his wife after her death in 1983.
Benjamin de Brie Taylor received his degree from Harvard in 1947 following his military service. He was an art professor, serving as the Dean of the Parsons School of Design in New York (1968-1970) and of the Herron School of Art at Indiana University (1970-1973). He was also the Director of the Institute of Design of Illinois Institute of Technology (1973-1975) and remained there as a professor until he became Professor Emeritus in 1987. Taylor also authored Design Lessons from Nature and had his paintings displayed in galleries such as the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brotherly Museum, and the Corcoran Gallery. He died in 2013.
Marie-Celine "Mimi" Taylor married Bill Scudder in 1949, and the pair had three children: Timothy Forbes Scudder, Kirby Richardson Scudder, and Celine de Brie Scudder (Hubber). Mimi Taylor later remarried John Kinney in 1972 and remained married to him until her death in 1997. Frank Carrol Taylor, born November 22, 1884, was the brother of William N. Taylor. He died in 1949.
