Abstract:

This collection contains materials belonging to the Taylor family.

Francis Greenleaf Allinson (1856-1931) was born December 16, 1856, in Burlington, New Jersey, the son of William James Allinson and Rebecca W. Hinchman Allinson. Allinson was educated at Haverford College, where he earned his bachelor's in 1876 and his master's in 1879. He received a second bachelor's from Harvard University in 1877, and his Ph.D. from John Hopkins University in 1880. In 1885, he married Mary Irwin Carey, and the couple had one daughter, Susanne Allinson (b. 1887). His first wife died in 1901, and he married Anne Crosby Emery in 1905. Allinson taught Latin and Greek at Haverford College, he was the Headmaster at the University School in Baltimore, Maryland. He was an assistant professor of Greek (1882). He also taught at Brown University in 1895. Allinson pbulished "Greek Lands and Letters" which was reproduced in multiple editions. He retired from teaching in 1928, and died on June 23, 1931.

Gertrude Allinson (1862-1948) was born on September 16, 1862, the daughter of William James Allinson and Rebecca W. Hinchman. She married Charles S. Taylor and had three children, Margaret Wood Taylor (b. 1898), Edward Allinson (b. 1900), and Lawrence Newbold Taylor (b. 1903). She died on November 17, 1948.

Charles Shoemaker Taylor (1850-1939) was born November 26, 1850, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Abraham Merritt Taylor and Elizabeth Robeson Shoemaker. Taylor was educated at Haverford College and graduated in 1871. He married Rebecca Hughes on June 12, 1873, and the couple had five children: Abraham Merritt Taylor (b. 1874), Charles Clifford Taylor (b. 1876), Joseph Wright Taylor (b. 1878), Marianna Taylor (b. 1881), and Frederick Raymond Taylor (b. 1887). After Taylor's first wife died in 1893, he married his second wife, Gertrude Allinson, with whom he had three children: Margaret Wood Taylor (b. 1898), Edward Allinson Taylor (b. 1900), and Lawrence Newbold Taylor (b. 1903). Charles Taylor was a real estate developer by profession, but he was also involved in higher education. He was a member of the original board of trustees for Bryn Mawr College until 1893, and he was the vice president of the Haverford College Alumni Association. Charles Shoemaker Taylor died September 21, 1939 in Haverford, Pennsylvania, at the age of 89.

This collection contains correspondence between Francis Greenleaf Allinson and his sister, Gertrude Allinson, while he was studying at Haverford. Additionally included within the collection is a certificate of clearness from marriage engagements, alerting members of the Burlington Monthly Meeting of Friends that Charles Shoemaker Taylor was preparing to marry Gertrude Allinson, a member of the meeting.
