Abstract:: Edward Hicks (1780-1849) was an American Quaker artist best known for his painting "The Peaceable Kingdom," of which he created more than 60 versions. Hicks lived in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania from 1811 until his death. The Newtown Historic Association collection on Edward Hicks and family, 1802-1986, includes a fair amount of original primary documents from Edward Hicks and his family members, as well as a large amount of articles, research notes, manuscripts, photocopies of Hicks documents and paintings, and related secondary materials compiled by Hicks scholars. The highlight of the collection is a daybook that was used by Edward Hicks and his son, Isaac W. Hicks, 1833-1885.

Carlson in Thorndale, Pennsylvania, its origins can be traced to 1936 although it was formally incorporated in 1940. Materials produced by the company were used in the first nuclear submarine, the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, and a space shuttle. The G. O. Carlson, Inc. production records, 1953-1998, include production orders, several record types relating to quality control and testing, various other production-related records. The collection also includes several binders of print outs of digital photographs of the G.O. Carlson lab, issues of Corrosion magazine, and a few other items not directly related to production.

Abstract:: Coatesville in Chester County, Pennsylvania is home to the longest operating steel mill in America, Lukens Steel Company. Development in the area was spurred by convenient transport routes offered by America's first turnpike, the Philadelphia to Lancaster Turnpike (now U.S. Route 30), and the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad, built in 1834. The Graystone Society, Inc. is today a not-for-profit educational institution dedicating to collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting iron and steel's history and its relationship to Coatesville, the region, and the nation. The Graystone Society collection on Coatesville history, 1880-2011, includes photographs, scrapbooks, minute books, clippings, school books, and various other family papers and organizational records relating to the people and organizations of Coatesville and the surrounding area. The New London Academy opened in 1743 and was responsible for educating a number of prominent colonial, revolutionary, and early American-era politicians, historians, clergy, and educators, including three signers of the Declaration of Independence. Abstract:: The Davis family moved to Newtown Square, Delaware County, Pennsylvania around 1850. William Thomas Davis bought the Newtown Square Inn in 1866 and held livestock auctions at the hotel. His son, Edward N. G. Davis, operated a grocery store in town before becoming a real estate broker. The Edward N. G. Davis family papers, 1896-1973, consist largely of financial ledgers with some correspondence, photographs, and other document types. Most items relate to Edward N. G. Davis, with another large portion of items from his father, William T. Davis. There are also materials from several other family members and the first minute book of the Improvement Association of West Chester Road, 1909-1910.

Ridpath's photographs include local scenes of eastern Montgomery County as well as some domestic scenes of late Victorian home-life. William M. Ridpath's photographs document his work on the construction of the Panama Canal as well as aspects of life in Panama.

Abstract:: The Keswick Theatre, designed by famed architect Horace Trumbauer as a combination vaudeville/movie house, opened in Glenside, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in 1928. The theater was closed in 1980 and slated for demolition when the Glenside Landmarks Society, a not-for-profit group, formed with the hope of restoring it to its former grandeur and operations. They were successful, and the Keswick re-opened under private ownership in 1988. The Old York Road Woman’s Exchange records, 1932-1995, consist largely of minutes that span nearly its entire existence (1932-1994), with several volumes of account books, a consigners’ book, a scrapbook, and a scattering of clippings and other memorabilia. The Old York Road Woman's Exchange was a charter member of the Federation of Woman's Exchanges, and this collection also includes several decades of the Federation’s annual meeting packets.

Gibson, Jr. (born circa 1922), established a firm to explore commercial uses of atomic energy in Palm Beach, Florida. The Gibson family papers, 1860-1955, primarily concern John Howard Gibson and his father Henry Clay Gibson, with some material on other family members. Abstract:: The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts was founded in 1966 as the social club of the Union Local No. 274 of the American Federation of Musicians. Local No. 274, the Black musicians union of Philadelphia, was in existence from 1935 to 1971. With members such as John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie, Local 274 was an important organization in the development of jazz in Philadelphia. The Clef Club served as a foundation for the city's jazz community, advancing projects to benefit jazz musicians. The Club continued to function as a social club until 1978, when it expanded its activities to include jazz performance, jazz instruction, and the preservation of Philadelphia's rich jazz history. The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts records, 1925-1974, include records of both the Black Musicians Union Local No. 274 and the Clef Club. Abstract:: Still in existence as of 2013, the News Herald was originally a local publication based in Perkasie, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The paper now exists as part of the Montgomery Media conglomerate as the Perkasie News-Herald. The News Herald photographs and negatives, 1982-2001, consist of photographic prints and negatives taken by reporters and photographers working for the newspaper. The images document local people, structures, and events.

Reeves Wetherill scrapbooks, circa 1800-1989 (bulk 1935-1985)

Abstract:: Reeves Wetherill (1912-1992) was a Philadelphia socialite who served as the Vice President for Public Relations at Wanamaker's department store from 1960-1987. He descended from Samuel Wetherill, a textile manufacturer involved in founding the Free Quakers during the American Revolution, and Christopher Wetherill, an early settler in Burlington County, New Jersey. The Reeves Wetherill scrapbooks, circa 1800-1989 (bulk 1935-1985), consist of about a dozen scrapbooks that document the activities of members of Philadelphia's upper class, including the lives of Reeves Wetherill and his wife, Sally Ann, as well as a small amount of 19th century documents relating to Reeves Wetherill's ancestors.

Harold E. Cox transportation photograph collection, 1915-1950 (bulk) 1901-1950 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company (PRT), founded in 1902, constructed subway and elevated train lines and managed public transportation in Philadelphia for nearly half of a century. In 1940, the Philadelphia Transportation Company (PTC) was established, absorbing PRT and taking over all of its functions. PTC was purchased by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) in 1968. The Harold E. Cox transportation photograph collection, 1901-1950 (bulk 1915-1950), consists of approximately 800 gelatin silver print photographs, about 50 film negatives, and a few PRT and PTC company newsletters, ephemera, and programs from employee events. Depicted in the photographs are Philadelphia street scenes, maintenance and repair work, vehicle interiors and exteriors, and employees from PRT and PTC.

Abstract:: William Warder Matos (1872-1935) owned an advertising company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the early 20th century. He was heavily involved in planning the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition of 1926. The William W. Matos papers on the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition, 1831-1928 (bulk 1920-1928), primarily consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and ephemera relating to the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition. Other materials in the collection include some personal papers of William W. Matos and a scrapbook documenting Women's Committee fundraising tea parties for the 1876 Centennial Exposition.

Abstract:: Aachen Printing Company was a commercial printing service owned by William R. Turner and located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, active from about 1946 to 1986. The Aachen Printing Company sample books, circa 1945-1985, consist of 16 scrapbooks that seem to include a copy of every item printed by Aachen Printing Company such as wedding invitations, company letterhead and memos, and other printed materials. Many items in the sample books are for prominent client Columbia Records.

Philadelphia Bureau of Police, Detective Service mugshot books, circa 1895-1911

Abstract:: In 1841, a police department directed by the Mayor was created in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, replacing the daily and nightly patrol that had been in place since December of 1830. One of the major factors driving the Consolidation Act of 1854 unifying the various municipalities within Philadelphia County into the City of Philadelphia was the need for a unified police force, which was established around that time. The Detective Division, later known as the Detective Service, was established in 1859. The Philadelphia Bureau of Police, Detective Service mugshot books, circa 1895-1911, consist of 12 volumes of identification photographs, also called rogues' galleries, of criminals and suspected criminals in Philadelphia. In addition to the individual's name, there is often other personal information listed with the photographs.
