Overview and metadata sections
Kiwanis Club is an international, co-educational service club founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. It is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States and is found in more than 80 nations and geographic areas. Kiwanis and its family of clubs includes 600,000 members, annually raise more than US$100 million, and report over 18 million volunteer hours to strengthen communities and serve children.
The Kiwanis Club of Jenkintown chapter began in 1948, when a committee of members from the Kiwanis Club of Glenside decided to sponsor the formation of a new Kiwanis Club of Jenkintown that would meet mid-day. On March 3, 1949, Kiwanis International granted an official charter to the Kiwanis Club of Jenkintown. The club sponsors many events through volunteers and donations in the Jenkintown area. Many of the programs center around the support of children. In the first year of its organization the club organized the Kiwanis Club orchestra, the Clean Literature Campaign, and the Kids’ Day Parade. The club has continued to organize these types of events in order to improve the lives of children and their communities.
The Kiwanis Club of Jenkintown records are a gift of the Kiwanis Club of Jenkintown consisting of 13 linear feet of material housed in 32 boxes. The collection spans from 1949 to 2014 and is comprised of chronological files, administrative records, financial materials, and membership records, as well as publications and memorabilia.
The chronological files contain an assortment of records organized by year. Administrative records include board meeting minutes, monthly reports, correspondence and memos, bylaws, and committee chairman reports, along with club history. Financial records include tax returns, budgets, checking and savings accounts, as well as a cash book. Membership records include attendance records and membership rosters, a 1996 survey of former members, and a scrapbook compiled by club member Ruth Joline. Publications in this collection were mostly produced by the Jenkintown club, but also include publications from the state and national organizations. They consist primarily of newsletters, in addition to some flyers, pamphlets, and club manuals. The collection also includes some photographs and two audio tapes, in addition to memorabilia and awards.
Of particular interest to researchers in this collection are the club history folders located in the "Administrative records" series, which details the inception of the Kiwanis Club of Jenkintown and the various activities held by the organization. There is a book entitled The Widening Path: An Interpretive Record of Kiwanis in the "Publications" series which gives insight into the Kiwanis Club's mission regarding community improvement and philanthropic vision. Also in the "Publications" series is a comprehensive set of newsletters, which give insight into the daily activities of the club from 1952 to 2000.
