Overview and metadata sections

Dora Anne Gilbert, Swarthmore College alumna of the Class of 1893, was born in 1869 and died 12/2/1964. She lived in Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, was a member of Chester Monthly Meeting, and a librarian at the Lindsay Law Library in Chester;

Her parents grew up in Byberry, Pennsylvania. Until 1904, her father directed the Gilbert Academy, which was located at 9th St. and Potter Ave. in Chester, Pa. Miss Gilbert had no direct descendents, and her papers were given to the FHL by her close friend Elizabeth R. Lester.

The collection contains chiefly biographical and genealogical materials relating to the Gilbert, Strickland, Trego, and allied families, together with memorabilia relating to Swarthmore College Class of 1893, of which Gilbert was a member.

The collection is divided into four series:

  1. Manuscript biographical and genealogical material
  2. Memorabilia
  3. Pictures
  4. Printed reference material

Donor: Elizabeth R. Lester, 1964, 1965

Gift of Elizabeth R. Lester, 1964, 1965, who was a close friend.

Collection was partially processed when received, then sorted and placed in a document box and placed in RG5. A folder of reunion minutes, memorabilia, and photos of the Swarthmore College class of 1893, were transferred to Swarthmore College Archives, RG6, in Series 10, Alumni Papers.
