Overview and metadata sections

Originally the Central News, the Perkasie (Bucks County, Pennsylvania) weekly newspaper founded in 1881, was merged with the Sellersville Herald in 1943 and became the News-Herald. After being in the Baum family for nearly 85 years, the News Herald was acquired by Montgomery Publishing Company in 1998. It is still in existence as of 2013.

This collection consists of photographs taken by reporters and photographers working for the News Herald, documenting local people, structures, and events. It is organized into two series: Photographic Prints and Negatives. The Photographic Prints, which make up a majority of the collection, are mostly black and white though a few are in color. Some are captioned and include the name of the photographer. They are organized by year and month.

The Negatives series includes negative strips that are organized by year and by subject. They are housed in the original enclosures, which are captioned and dated. Also included are captioned color slides of photographs taken by B. Carroll, 2000-2001, arranged chronologically.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Perkasie Historical Society directly for more information.
