This is a finding aid. It is a description of archival material held at the Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. Unless otherwise noted, the materials described below are physically available in their reading room, and not digitally available through the web.

Overview and metadata sections

James S. Haviland, a birthright Quaker, was born in 1849, the son of William F. and Sarah Ann (Carpenter) Haviland of Purchase Monthly Meeting (N.Y.). In 1874 the married Elizabeth Griffen, daughter of Henry. They had two daughters, Martha G. and Louise E.; the latter married J. Barnard Walton in 1910.

The collection contains correspondence, financial, and legal papers, and miscellaneous manuscripts of the families of James S. and Elizabeth (Griffen) Haviland. Includes materials of the related Griffen, Field, and Parry families, especially the correspondence of Seneca Ely and Priscilla Stubbs Parry of Lancaster County, Pa, 1826-67, and of his sister, Rachel Parry Brosius.

The collection is divided into thirteen series, according to family names.

Papers descended to donor, Barnard Walton, through is wife's family.

Collection was composed of letters, documents, newspaper accounts from Haviland family and related families (including Bowne, Carpenter, Cromwell, Field, Griffen, Haydock, Stoutenburgh and Sutton) and reference material. Collection sorted and filed in documents box, fall of 1957. Additional materials added in 1977. In 1982, Minute Book of the Young Friends Association of Purchase, N.Y., removed from collection and transferred to RG 4. Individually catalogued as RG 4/075.
