Overview and metadata sections

Leonard R. Clark (1922-2004), from Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, served in World War II with the Navy on the Pacific front for over three years until his discharge at the end of the war.

This collection includes Clark's letters to his family in Jenkintown while he was stationed in New Caledonia and Okinawa in 1945. He writes of life on base (frequently complaining of the monotony), responds to letters and packages sent to him, occasionally makes reports on the local scenery and population, and comments briefly on Roosevelt's death and the victories in Europe and Japan.

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Old York Road Historical Society directly for more information.

Views from New Caledonia and portraits of Leonard R. Clark were transferred to Old York Road Historical Society photograph collection.
