Abstract:
George Byron Gordon led expeditions to Copan at the end of the nineteenth century and, with his brother MacLaren Gordon, to Alaska in 1905 and 1907. As Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and as Director of the Museum, Gordon was first to conduct regular lectures to undergraduate and graduate students in Anthropology and oversaw one of the the largest periods of Museum growth. The G.B. Gordon Central America collection includes diaries, surveying notes, reports and stories from the Copan Expeditions and the Yucatan Expedition in 1910, original stories, articles, and book reviews written by Dr. Gordon, communication with The British Museum about Maya site excavation, Gordon's introductions composed for speakers for the Saturday Afternoon Lecture Series, speeches to professional organizations, and class lectures.

Tatiana Proskouriakoff Papers, 1944-1958 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Born in Russia in 1909, Tatiana Proskouriakoff came to the United States in 1916. She received a BS degree in Architecture from Penn State University in 1930. Because of the lack of architecture jobs during the Depression, she enrolled in graduate studies in anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. Through her volunteer archaeological drawings at the University Museum, she was invited by Linton Satterthwaite to participate in two seasons of field work at the Maya site of Piedras Negras, starting what became a brilliant career in Maya scholarship. Proskouriakoff produced a series of reconstructive drawings depicting ancient Mayan cities, which were published as “An Album of Maya Architecture.” She secured positions at the Carnegie Institute of Washington under Sylvanus Morley and at the Peabody Museum of Harvard University. Her painstakingly detailed studies of Mayan glyphs became a turning point in the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing. She died in 1985 as one of a...(see more)

Hiram M. Hiller Personal Papers, 1895-1907 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Hiram Milliken Hiller, Jr. was born in 1867 in Kahoka, Missouri to Colonel Hiram Milliken Hiller and Sarah Bell Hiller. He graduated from Parson’s College, Iowa, in 1887 and from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1891. In 1895, he made the first of a series of voyages to the East with Furness and Harrison. From 1895-1901, Hiller visited Borneo, Japan, Sri Lanka, Siberia, and other locations in Asia. Hiller conducted ethnographical studies of the Dayaks of Borneo, the Nagas of Assam, India, and the Ainu of Japan. These letters span the period from October 1895 to May 1907, with the years 1896-1902 the most significantly represented. Most of them are from Hiram Hiller, Jr. to family members in Kahoka, particularly his mother Sarah and his sister Lida Hiller (Lapsley).

Algot Lange papers, circa 1912 - 1914, 1915, 1967

Abstract:
Algot Lange (1884- ) was a Swedish/Danish adventurer and amateur anthropologist who visited the Amazon River basin in 1910 and 1913. During the 1910 expedition Lange documented the rubber trade and the native peoples of eastern Peru. During the 1913 expedition he undertook the initial preparation for the University of Pennsylvania’s South American (Amazon) expedition. Lange was replaced as leader of this expedition by William C. Farabee, who continued the project from 1913 to 1916. The Algot Lange records consist of one series of three notebooks concerning the Tupi (Nheengatu) language and culture of the Amazon basin compiled by Lange while at the University of Pennsylvania sometime between 1912 and 1914.

Theodoor de Booy Sierra de Perija expedition records, 1916-1919 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Theodoor deBooy, a native of the Netherlands, immigrated to the United States in 1906, becoming a citizen in 1916. Trained neither as an archaeologist nor anthropologist, he nevertheless traveled independently to the Bahamas in 1911 to study the Caicos group of islands and, in 1912, published his "Lucayan Remains on the Caicos Islands." From that time on, de Booy dedicated himself to the field of archaeology. The collection includes correspondence with George Byron Gordon, Director of the Penn Museum, a catalog of artifacts, photographs, a bibliography of the region, and lists of his lantern slides, how they should be colored, and how used in publication by the Museum.

Abstract:
The Solomon H. Katz Alaska papers consist of documents related to a series of studies and surveys that Dr. Katz and his colleagues conducted in Barrow and Norton Sound, Alaska between 1969 and 1973. The research was intended to examine the effects of rapid cultural and socio-economic change on the native population, specifically in the areas of physical and mental health. Many of the surveys were not conducted by Katz, but were subsequently used in his research. In the Norton Sound projects, Katz served as a consultant.

Thomas Zwicker received his M.A.in Anthropology from the University of Pennslyvania in 1984 having conducted his research in Ahmedabad, India. His master’s thesis was entitled “Morality and Etiquette in the Reproduction of Hierarchical Caste Relations in South Asia”. He continued his tenure at Penn as a doctorial student in Anthropology, receiving a Research Fellowship from the American Institute of Indian Studies for a field study in India of the moral system of contemporary Jainas. The Thomas Zwicker personal papers consist of two archival boxes of material divided into six series.

Elin Danien collection of Robert Burkitt papers, 1903-1913 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Elin Danien Collection of Robert Burkitt Papers was discovered by Danien on her trip to Guatemala in 1985. Consisting of notebooks on the languages of the native Indians in the Guatemalan Highlands, the collection was found on the property of a family with whom Robert Burkitt stayed while working for the Penn Museum in Guatemala. Previously thought to be destroyed, the works are from the early portion of Burkitt's time in Central America, 1903 to 1913, before he formally began to collect and catalogue artifacts for the Museum. The collection consists of four linguistic notebooks, a comparative chart of the languages with a word list, a Spanish-Kekchi dictionary created by Burkitt, a portion of Burkitt's Dresden Manuscript, an Index to a linguistic notebook that is not a part of the collection, and loose papers from other notebooks. A purchased Espanol-Quecchi dictionary from Coban, 1890, is also a part of the collection.

Abstract:
The Cape Nome expedition collection was donated to the University Museum by the author himself, John Bockstoce. The collection documents Bockstoce’s records and analysis of his archeological findings in Cape Nome fom 1969-1974. It consists of five series: field notes, drawings, photographs, reports and publications, and oversized documents. The expedition was conducted by Bockstoce for the purpose writing a dissertation on the cultures of the Arctic and obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Oxford, which he achieved in 1974. This expedition was advised by Dr. Froelich Rainey of the University Museum, University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Douglas Anderson of the Haffenreffer Museum of Brown University, and Dr. Derek Roe of Oxford University.

Abstract:
Ruben Reina was born in 1924 in Argentina and educated at the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His first appointment was as an Instructor of Anthropology and Sociology at Women's College at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Reina followed this teaching experience with an Assistant Professorship in Anthropology at the University of Puerto Rico for the academic year 1956-1957 and then assumed an Assistant Professorship in the Anthropology Department of the University of Pennsylvania. Ruben E. Reina's fieldwork began while he was an undergraduate with expeditions in the Guatemalan Highlands, Mexico, and a mountain community in North Carolina. Subsequent trips took him to Puerto Rico; Peten, Guatemala; British Honduras; the Yucatan; Argentina; Spain; Brazil; British Guiana; Turkey; Iran(Hasanlu expedition); and Antigua, Zunil, and Coban, Guatemala. Henry C. Mercer papers, 1891-1956 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Henry C. Mercer was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on June 24, 1856. Following his graduation from Harvard University in 1879, he enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania School of Law. Mercer studied law for one year and then "read law" with the firm of Freedley and Hollingsworth. While he was admitted to the bar in 1881, Mercer immediately left for Europe where he spent months traveling through Germany and France. Mercer embarked on a study and apprenticeship in the art of pottery making which he would pursue in later life. Mercer served as curator of American and Prehistoric Archaeology at the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania from the early to the late 1890s. The Henry C. Mercer papers fill one-half of an archival box and are divided into six series. The photographs are housed with the oversized materials.

The Gordion Project collection documents the University of Pennsylvania survey and excavation of the ancient site of Gordion in central Turkey from 1947 until 2008. Collection series include excavation and conservation records under the authority of project directors Rodney S. Young (1950-1974), Keith R. DeVries (1975-1987) and G. Kenneth Sams (1988-2008) as well as fundraising and publication records during this period. Significant gaps and omissions in documentation occur after about 1990. The textual records are followed by photographs from the excavation site taken mostly between 1950 and 1975. Additional graphic material and field notebooks remain to be added to this collection.

Clarkson Clothier (1846-1917) of Philadelphia was an avid businessman and actively participated in numerous social and charitable organizations. In 1901, he embarked on a trip around the world with his family, which they documented through photographs and travel diaries. The Clarkson Clothier Lantern Slide Collection includes lantern slides of photographs from his trip, as well as purchased professional slides of views from around the world. These lantern slides have been catalogued in the digital database. The collection also includes two travel diaries.

The Harvey L. Stahl Collection includes color 35mm slides, black and white 35mm safety negatives, and black and white photographic prints taken between May 1967 and May 1968 in South Korea and Japan by Harvey L. Stahl while stationed there with the U.S. Army. Subjects include landscapes, cityscapes, portraits of Koreans (children and adults), street scenes of the marketplace, cobblers, construction workers, women washing laundry, children at play, military vehicles and personnel, the Bob Hope Show, the Korea Trade Fair, and temples in Japan.

Jacob D. Elder Papers, Folklore Archives, 1962-1965 (bulk) 1949-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Born in Trinidad in 1913, Jacob Elder was a primary school tescher and community development officer before attending Penn to study for his doctorate in folklore. Elder specialized in the traditional music of Trinidad and Tobago. In addition to his scholarly studies, Elder worked to develop the Steel Band and song competitions in his native land to encourage the restless youth to find purpose and fulfillment. Manuscript holdings include approximately two linear feet of cultural material, research, working manuscript and disertation, song, lyric and interview transcriptions, folktales, stories and scripts. The West Indies Recordings contain approximately 160 hours of recorded sound collected in Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada, and St. Vincent between 1959-1965, during Elder’s dissertation fieldwork.

Roger D. Abrahams is a native of Philadelphia, PA. He received his B.A. at Swarthmore College, M.A. at Columbia University, and Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1986 he came to teach in the English and Anthropology Departments at the University of Pennsylvania following many years at the University of Texas and Scripps and Pitzer Colleges. While at Penn he served as the Founding Director for the Center for Folklore and Ethnography. The Roger D. Abrahams Collection consists of three linear feet of textual records related to his research in the Caribbean Islands and publications from throughout his career. Reel-to-reel tape recordings of songs, stories, and poems from the Caribbean, as well as photographic slides and negatives are also included in the collection.

The lives of James and Mary Bond, a Philadelphia ornithologist and author, respectively, were altered the day that author Ian Fleming, a bird lover who was familiar with Bond’s book, “The Birds of the West Indies,” appropriated James Bond’s name for his fictional spy character. The resulting confusion prompted Mary Wickham Bond to write “How 007 Got His Name,” in 1966, in which she tells the story of the real James Bond. This collection consists of Mary Wickham Bond’s collection of information regarding her husband, her own works on the writing, publishing and promoting of her books about her husband, and David Contosta’s writings about her husband.

Lubin Manufacturing Company records, 1881-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Siegmund Lubin (1851-1923) founded the Lubin Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which, from 1895 to just before its collapse in 1916, grew to be one of the largest motion picture production companies in the world. His moviemaking empire started with the purchase of one film projector in 1895. Before long, it included a chain of movie theaters, multiple state-of-the-art production studios across the United States, hundreds of employees, numerous patents for recording and projecting equipment, and international movie distribution. Lubin's logo and motto, "Clear As A Bell," referred to the superior quality of his motion picture images. The Lubin Manufacturing Company records, 1881-2006, contains photographs, advertisements, business records, publicity materials, and artifacts documenting Siegmund Lubin’s short-lived career as one of America’s most successful film producers during the silent film era.
