Annie Warburton Goodrich (1866-1954) trained at New York Hospital School of Nursing from 1890 to 1892. Following her training, she went on to become head nurse at New York Hospital. Goodrich held a number of supervisory positions in New York City including the Post-Graduate Hospital, St.Luke's Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, Allied Hospital, and Visiting Nurse Service of Henry Street Settlement. She also taught in the Department of Nursing and Health at Teachers College, Columbia University. From 1914 until 1923, Goodrich served as an inspector of training schools for the New York State Department of Education. Goodrich established the United States Student Nurse Reserve, more commonly known as the Army School of Nursing, in 1918-1919. In 1923, she became 1st Dean of the new Yale University School of Nursing begun with money from Rockefeller Foundation. In 1935, now Dean Emerita, she spent a year helping the now University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing serving as Special Lecturer on Nursing Education.

Goodrich's papers constitute 1.25 linear feet and include files of organizations with which she associated, biographical material, miscellaneous documents, and photographs. The collection is particularly strong in documenting her role as dean of the Army School of Nursing and Yale University School of Nursing.

Scope and Contents note

This series consists of records that document the organizations with which Goodrich was active. There is one brief file documenting her work as an inspector of training schools for the New York State Department of Education. The United States Student Nurse Reserve, more commonly known as the Army School of Nursing, is represented with reproductions from the National Archives. The files representing Goodrich's work at Yale University School of Nursing consist of reports relating to the establishment of the school, lectures delivered in class and at professional meetings, reports prepared for the Connecticut's Board of Examination and Registration of Nurses, and the proceedings of a 1938 National Health Conference.
