Overview and metadata sections
Neville E. Strumpf, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a nationally and internationally known nurse researcher who focused on gerontology and the movement to reduce restraint use in elderly adults. She is a professor emeritus from the University of Pennsylvania where she served as Interim Dean 2000-2001 and was Chair of the Faculty Senate. In 2022 she was recognized as a member of the Distinguished Daughters of Pennsylvania.
Strumpf received a bachelor's degree in nursing from the State University of New York in 1969 and a master's degree in nursing from Russell Sage College in 1973. She received a Ph.D. in nursing from New York University in 1982. Strumpf joined the University of Pennsylvania's School of Nursing faculty in 1982 as an assistant professor. She became director of the Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Program in 1985, and it has been named first nationally among gerontology programs in U.S. News & World Report rankings in 1998 and in 2001. She was responsible for implementing gerontology into the undergraduate curriculum at Penn. Strumpf focused her advanced research and education into gerontological care and the clinical problems of caring for elders, improving outcomes of their care and creating individualized care for frail adults. Her work in these areas evolved to include studies into restraint-free care, quality of life for older cancer patients, access to services for refugee elders, and prevention of falls.
Working with long-time research partner, Dr. Lois Evans, Strumpf's research revolutionized nursing practice in nursing homes by reducing the use of restraints on the elderly. Another area of research included an interdisciplinary projects with colleagues to examine at-risk groups of elders living in Philadelphia in a comparative study of refugee caregivers concerning life experiences, health status, and knowledge of available services. In addition, Strumpf has completed a National Institute on Aging study to test the viability of a home-based intervention to prevent falls among inner-city African Americans. She has written numerous articles and co-written and edited several books.
