David W. Fraser papers, 1971-2007 (inclusive)

Abstract:
David Fraser was the 12th President of Swarthmore College (1982-1991). Trained as a physician with an emphasis on epidemiology, David W. Fraser (b. 1944) is also known as an advocate of liberal arts education, a scholar of public health, and an artist in traditional methods of textile construction. He joined Swarthmore College in 1982 after working at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and resigned from Swarthmore in 1991 to to head the Social Welfare Department at the Aga Khan Secretariat. This scattered collection, which dates from 1971 to 2007 (bulk 1982-1991), primarily consists of records from Fraser's time as President of Swarthmore College, including the construction of the Blue Route (I-476), financial aid, National Association of Independent Colleges & Universities, senior staff retreats, and more. There are journals from his time as Swarthmore College president, as well as preceding years working for the CDC and Aga Khan.

Rebecca Chopp was the 14th President of Swarthmore College (2009-2014). She is a well-known scholar of religion and American culture. While at Swarthmore, Chopp researched changing structures and cultures of higher education, the role of liberal arts in a democratic society, and religion and higher education. She resigned from Swarthmore College in 2014 to become the 18th Chancellor of the University of Denver. This collection includes correspondence, speech texts, and other documents from Chopp's time as Swarthmore College President. Also included are similar documents from Interim President Constance Hungerford, 2014-2015.

At Swarthmore classes in dance technique have been offered as part of the physical education curriculum for men and women since the 1940s. The study of dance at Swarthmore College became part of the performing arts program in the late 1970s and was established as a major and minor in course and Honors in 1999. The collection contains materials relating to the the Swarthmore Folk Festival and other folk dance activities at Swarthmore (known as the "Co-Ed Dance Club"), as well as documents dating from after Dance was established as an academic program at Swarthmore, including materials collected for tributes to Pat Boyer, the first Director of Dance.

The Little Theater Club was established at Swarthmore College about 1922 to create a stable foundation for theatrical projects and coordinate productions on campus. No course credit was given for participation. After Swarthmore created a Drama Department in 1968/69, the Little Theater Club became inactive. The collection contains the records of the Little Theater Club of Swarthmore College, 1924-1969, including programs, scripts, clippings, financial records, and related materials. Swarthmore College WSRN (Radio Station) records, 1957-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Swarthmore College Radio Club, founded before 1933, was reorganized in 1939. It was open to all students interested in short wave radio communication. The club had its own transmitter and operated station W3YJ, affiliated with the American Radio Relay League. In 1940, the Radio Club began to sponsor the Swarthmore Network, a wired wireless station on the commercial broadcast band. The station acquired its current call letters, WSRN, sometime before 1952; it was a member of the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS). Collection consists of three folders of background information, program guides, and an inventory of the recordings, in addition to 37 boxes of original recordings.

Tau Alpha Omicron, a men's Greek fraternity, was founded at Swarthmore College in 1907. It became part of the national fraternity Phi Delta Theta before 1923, designated Pennsylvania Kappa Chapter. Its charter was revoked in 1958 when its members protested the national organization's racial, ethnic, and religious restrictions on membership. It then became a local fraternity, resuming its original name. The collection contains primarily the original building bonds retired by the College and related financial information and correspondence compiled by the Tau Alpha Omicron Alumni Corporation.

Abstract:
This series contains Alumni Records Office procedures documents as well as alumni surveys conducted by the College and various committees. Arthur Beardsley's 1894 survey of alumni was used as the basis for The Alumni Historical Catalogue, 1873-1892. A survey conducted by an alumni group, The Garnet Band, was used gain support for the resumption of Swarthmore-Haverford football and the weekly publication of the Phoenix. After World War I, the Dean's Office conducted a survey of the military experience of men students. Collection also contains procedures documents and computing instructions for the Alumni Records Office in the 1970s.

Friendly Open House was a senior citizens group founded in 1949 in Swarthmore, Pa., under the name "Older Persons Open House." In 1951, the name was changed to Friendly Open House. The group met in the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church with financial support from other local churches and organizations. The purpose was to provide stimulating programs and offer various activities and projects. The final meeting was in May 1996. An women's all-volunteer Sponsor Committee organized the program.

The Benezet House Association, Philadelphia, Pa., was formed in 1917 to assist and educate the City's poor African American and immigrant residents. It was created by the merger of the Joseph Sturge Mission School, a First Day school for African Americans founded in 1865; Anthony Benezet School, founded in 1795 as the School for Black People and their Descendants (also known as the Raspberry Street School); and Western District Colored School, founded 1848 under the care of Twelfth Street Meeting as a graded primary school. This collection also contains records of the Locust Street Mission Association, the Joseph Sturge Mission School, and the Beehive School for Colored Children.

Friends for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Concerns (FLGBTQC) is a North American Quaker faith community. It was founded in 1971 as a Committee of Concern. In 1978 it became the Friends for Lesbian and Gay Concerns (FLGC), a national Quaker-affiliated group of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and sympathetic others. The name was changed to Friends for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Concerns at the Mid-Winter Gathering held February 2003. Records consist of minutes, clerks' correspondence, financial records, publication records, miscellaneous resource files, and conference materials.

Abstract:
Minutes and financial records for the "Here a Little, There a Little" Chapter of the King's Daughters, an international Christian philanthropic association. Records are dated from the 1892-1975, with gaps. While this New York chapter was primarily Quaker, the association itself was evangelical Christian in orientation, with Baptist and Congregationalist membership in other parts of the world. Members gathered to read Bible passages, discuss Lenten observance, and perform philanthropic work. The latter included donations to the Colored Mission and production of diapers and other garments.

Abstract:
The Foulke family was a prominent Quaker family of Richland, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, descended from Edward (1651-1741) and Eleanor (Hugh) Foulke (d. 1733) who emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1698. Their descendents married into the Roberts, Mather, Morris, and other Quaker families and were active in Quaker and Bucks County affairs. The Foulke Family Papers contain correspondence, business and legal papers, surveys, genealogical notes, and memorabilia of the Foulke, Roberts, and Mather, and related families. Of particular interest is a letter from Reubens Peale to Jane Roberts concerning silhouettes and correspondence between Joseph Foulke and George Hatton, a cousin in Indiana, between Joseph Foulke and George Hatton, a cousin in Indiana, about the Hicksite controversy.

Albert Vann Fowler (1904-1968) and Helen Wose Fowler (1907-1968), married to each other in 1937, were poets, freelance writers, and managing editors of the literary periodical, Approach. They also founded Ahab Press in Rosemont, Pa. Albert V. Fowler was a Quaker. This collection is primarily composed of literary manuscripts and publications. Included are materials on Scylla the Beautiful, Landcastle, Two Trends in Modern Quaker Thought, The Fish God, as well as numerous lesser works. Also contains information on War and Civilization, edited by Albert V. Fowler, Approach magazine, and correspondence with Anne G. Sneller, S. Abstract:
This small collection of Quaker family papers appears to have been collected and preserved by Elizabeth Pearsall Frazier (1869-1957) and her daughter, Elizabeth P. Frazier (b. 1902). They include family genealogy, some correspondence, manuscript writings, financial papers, two wills, and reference material. The Pearsall side and its allied families, especially Parrish, were Quakers of long standing. Prior to 1800 the Pearsalls were a New York family, but after that they intermarried with Philadelphia Friends and made their homes in the Philadelphia area. There were strong ties with Burlington, NJ, and some of its Quaker families, including the Dillwyns and their relations. The bulk of this collection dates between 1807 and 1848. Wilbur K. Thomas (1882-1953), a Quaker born in Indiana, was executive secretary of the American Friends Service Committee from 1918 to 1929. He graduated from Friends University in 1904, served as pastor of various Quaker churches, graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1907, earned a Ph.D. from Boston University in 1914, and was a member of Boston Friends Meeting after 1909. He was director of the Carl Schurz Memorial Foundation in Philadelphia from 1930 to 1946. The collection contains biographical material, correspondence (1918-1933), speeches and writings relating to his work with the AFSC and as a pastor in Quaker communities. Topics covered include peace, civil liberties, social service, prisons, and relief activities in Russia in 1922, as well as his Ph.D. dissertation, "the Social Service of Quakerism."

Murray Drabkin (1928-) was a commercial bankruptcy lawyer at Hopkins and Sutter in Washington, D.C. until 2001. He was a member of the National Bankruptcy Conference and co-authored the "Judges' bill," which, together with the "Commission bill," drafted by a federal commission to study bankruptcy laws, was the basis for the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978. The Oral History Project was begun by the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ) at its 2004 Annual Meeting. The purpose of the project was to record interviews in which past presidents of the NCBJ reminisced about the organization and the role they played in it. The project later expanded to encompass oral histories of prominent bankruptcy judges. The collection chiefly includes oral histories recorded with past presidents of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. Frank W. Koger, 1930-2003, received his J.D. from Kansas City University in 1953 and his L.L.M. from University of Missouri in 1966. After having worked in private practice since 1956, Koger was appointed Bankruptcy Judge to the Eighth Judicial Circuit in 1986. He remained in this position until his retirement in 1997. Koger was a member of the American Bar Association, the Commercial Law League of America, and the Missouri Bar Association. He was also a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, where he served as Secretary, Vice President, and President in the 1990s. The collection, 1990-1997, chiefly includes records created and assembled by Koger as a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges from 1993-1997. The collection also includes materials regarding a skit, created by Koger, which gained notoriety within the bankruptcy law community.

Mary Davies Scott (born in 1944) earned her J.D. from the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, in 1978. Scott was appointed Bankruptcy Judge to the Eastern District of the United States Federal Court in 1987, where she remained until her retirement in 2002. From 1996 to 2002, she served as a member of the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Scott is a member of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, where she has served in a number of leadership roles. She has served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Bankruptcy since 2002. Scott planned and taught at various workshops and seminars for the Federal Judicial Center, an organization that provides continuing education to the federal judiciary, including bankruptcy judges. Robert B. Morton (1912-2005) earned his law degree from the University of Kansas in 1935. In 1962, Morton became a judge in the United States Bankruptcy Court, a position he held until 1986. Abstract:
Johns-Manville was an American corporation that made insulation and roofing materials. In the 1980s, the company faced a number of class-action lawsuits based on asbestos-related injuries from its asbestos insulation. As a result, in 1982 Johns-Manville file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. At the time, the company was the largest to ever file for Chapter 11, also known as corporate known as corporate reorganization. The bankruptcy court of the Southern District of New York heard the case, rendering its decision in 1990. The collection, 1982-1990, includes pleadings and other records filed over the course of the case.

Francis Kirkham (1904-1996) was born in Utah in 1904. After earning his undergraduate and law degrees from George Washington University, Kirkham clerked for two Supreme Court Justices, including former Chief Justice Evan Hughes. During his time as a law clerk, Kirkham drafted a report suggesting revisions to the way people filed for bankruptcy, which was a pertinent issue in the wake of the Great Depression. This report, "Suggested Revisions to the General Orders and Forms of Bankruptcy," was published in 1939. The collection, circa 1935-1939, includes correspondence with Supreme Court Justices, drafts, reports, National Bankruptcy Conference drafts, and related material regarding Kirkham's activity as a Supreme Court law clerk drafting the "General Order and Rules of Bankruptcy," which was published in 1939.

Mark B. McFeeley has well over thirty-five years of experience practicing law in America, of which twenty-eight years (1981-2009) was dedicated to serving as a bankruptcy judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Mexico. Judge McFeeley was instrumental in forming the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the Tenth Circuit. As a bankruptcy judge, McFeeley was intimately involved with the Bankruptcy Crisis of the 1980s that called into question the constitutionality of the bankruptcy system and the appointment of bankruptcy judges after the Marathon Pipeline decision in June of 1982. In 1984, Judge McFeeley was one of four bankruptcy judges who filed suit against the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. In the midst of World War II, the American Law Institute convened a committee in 1941 to study the international community's position regarding human rights law. The committee's charge was to develop a Statement of Essential Human Rights. At the May 1959 Annual Meeting of the American Law Institute (ALI), Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren encouraged the ALI to undertake a study to define the jurisdictions of state and federal courts. Following a feasibility study by Professor Charles Bunn, the ALI assembled a group of its members to create the Study of the Division of Jurisdiction Between State and Federal Courts, promulgated in 1968. The resulting study formed the basis of Title 28 in the United States Code. In the course of establishing what would become the First Restatement of the Law, the American Law Institute (ALI) considered including a clarification of the Law of Evidence. However, due to perceived deficiencies in the law, the American Law Institute resolved to begin a project that would provide a thorough reworking of the existing law of evidence. In 1939, the ALI secured funding to develop such a project. Edmund M. Morgan served as Reporter, and John H. Wigmore served as Chief Consultant. The resulting body of law was the Model Code of Evidence, adopted by the ALI in May 1942. The collection, 1939-1954, includes correspondence, meeting minutes, drafts, memoranda, commentary, outside publications, and related material concerning the drafting and adoption of the Model Code of Evidence, an effort to standardize common-law evidence rules.

In 1935, the American Law Institute (ALI) partnered with the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law to create an act that would complement the ALI's earlier Restatement of the Law of Property. At the time, the NCCUSL had already begun work on a Uniform Property Act. Richard Powell served as the reporter on the project representing the ALI. The resulting document, the Uniform Property Act, was adopted by the ALI in December 1958. The collection, 1936-1938, includes drafts, memoranda, and related records created in the course of drafting the Uniform Property Act.

In 1977, the American Law Institute (ALI) commissioned a review of the principles, customs, and laws that related to operating a corporation, known the Principles of Corporate Governance project. Work on the project culminated in 1992, when the ALI formally adopted the Principles of Corporate Governance. A set of reporter's notes, which reflected the analysis and scholarship of the reporters on the project, was published in 1994. The collection, 1981-1990, includes meeting records, drafts, letters, comments, and other records related to the drafting of the Principles of Corporate Governance, a project that aimed to summarize the conditions under which corporations lawfully conduct operations.

In 1952, the American Law Institute secured funding for an exploratory project on possible work in antitrust law. Robert R. Bowie was appointed Reporter for the project. In 1953, a report was published, but no further action was taken by ALI. Work on the project continued throughout the 1960s, with a resolution adopted in 1961 that a project related to antitrust law be recommenced in the next round of funding. Correspondence, reports, and other records, 1950-1963, related to a study commissioned by the American Law Institute regarding possible work in the field of anti-trust and patent law.

Aaron Twerski was born in 1940. He graduated from Marquette University School of Law. He served as Professor at Hofstra School of Law from 1927 to 1986 and at Brooklyn Law School from 1986 to 2005. He became Dean of Hofstra in 2005 and returned to Brooklyn Law School in 2007. Twerski taught and has published on torts, products liability, and conflict of laws. He served as Co-reporter for the American Law Institute's Restatement of Torts, Third: Products Liability from 1991 to 1998. The collection, 1991-1997, includes correspondence, drafts, comments, Product Liability Advisory Council reports, and other materials related to Twerski's work as Co-reporter (along with James A. The Ira Ellman Family Dissolution Papers house the correspondence and printed material of the Chief Reporter of the American Law Institute on the ten year study of the Principles of the Law of Family Dissolution. The collection chronicles Ellman's term as Chief Reporter on the Project starting in 1991 and ranging until the study's completion in 2001. A majority of the collection is composed of printed material of various sources and Principle drafts, as well as some correspondence between Ellman and a variety of law professors concerning the process of creating tentative drafts on the issue of family dissolution. The subject of all of these documents dealt with sub-topics of family dissolution. A large number of drafts of the Principles of Family Dissolution compose the collection. The collection looks at the treatment of partners, division of property, private agreements and formal contracts, child support and custodial responsibility.

The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. An association of practitioners and scholars known as the "Committee on the Establishment of a Permanent Organization for Improvement of Law" published a study that recommended a lawyers' organization be formed to improve the law and its administration. The committee was chaired by Elihu Root and counted Learned Hand, Benjamin Cardozo, and Samuel Williston among its members. This photograph collection is comprised of portraits of ALI directors, presidents, members, and staff. Also included are photographs from the Annual Meeting, including the 1st Annual Meeting in 1923.

Lawrence Waggoner is considered a prominent figure in law reform in the field of wills, trusts, and future interests. Not only did Waggoner teach law for 44 years, he also had an influential role outside the classroom. He served as adviser for the Restatement (Third) of Trusts, reporter for the Restatement (Third) of Property, Wills, and Other Donative Transfers, director of research for the Joint Editorial Board for Uniform Trusts and Estates Acts, reporter for the Uniform Probate Code which he completed the revisions for in 2008, and one of his last publications was the last volume of the Restatement (Third) of Property: Wills and Other Donative Transfers. Abstract:
William Draper Lewis was born in Philadelphia in 1867. In 1891, he received both a law degree and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1892, he became editor of the American Law Register, one of the oldest legal periodicals of the time. That same year, Lewis married Caroline Mary Cope. They had four children, Henry, Alfreda Cope, Anna, and William Draper Jr. and resided in Germantown, Pennsylvania. In 1896, Lewis joined the law department at the University of Pennsylvania as Dean and Professor of Law. Under Lewis' leadership, the law school flourished as he recruited new faculty, broadened the curriculum, and strengthened the collections of the Biddle Law Library. He served as Dean until 1914 but continued on the faculty until 1924. In 1923, Lewis became the founding director of the American Law Institute (ALI). Lewis died in Northeast Harbor, Maine in 1949. George W. Taylor (1901-1972) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics in 1921 and a Ph.D. in 1929.Taylor taught at Wharton for over 30 years of which during that time, he became an influential expert in the field of industrial relations, including arbitration, mediation, and alternative dispute resolution. Taylor received major acclaim when he mediated an end to the Apex Hosiery Strike in Philadelphia in 1932 and orchestrated the passage in 1967, of the Public Employees Fair Employment Law, which is commonly known as "the Taylor Law." The collection, 1921-1970, consists of correspondence, trade negotiations, laws, agreements and studies surrounding the hosiery labor industry in the early to mid 20th century. The collection also contains files pertaining to memo series, decision series, and umpire decisions pertaining to the hosiery industry.

In March 1925, the American Law Institute (ALI) started the Code of Criminal Procedure project. The resulting volume attempted to provide a framework for effective administration of criminal law while maintaining protection for the rights of the accused. The project was led by two Reporters, William E. Mikell and Edwin R. Keedy, who were also colleagues at Penn Law with the help of twelve Advisers. This collection consists of materials that document a small section of the project. The collection includes correspondence, suggestions and criticisms, notes, and other materials related to the drafting of the code, which outlined procedures for carrying out criminal law and defined the rights of the accused in areas such as arrest, bail, and execution.

Born on September 14, 1742 in Carskerdo, Fife, Scotland. Although James Wilson attended numerous universities while living Scotland, he never attained a degree. It was Wilson's pursuit of studying law that helped pave become a significant figure in American history. Wilson began studying law at the law office of John Dickinson. By 1766, Wilson attained the bar in Philadelphia and soon after opened his own practice in Reading. Wilson was fairly successful as a lawyer and he managed to amass a small fortune during this time. Wilson's greatest achievement in public life was his part in the establishment of the United States Constitution. He regularly advocated the idea that sovereignty resided in the people, that the President and members of both houses of Congress should be popularly elected. Abstract:
The Judge Norma L. Shapiro papers, 1957-2016, consist of material from Shapiro's time as a federal judge and her active involvement in legal organizations. Norma Levy Shapiro attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) from 1949 to 1951. In August 1978, President Jimmy Carter nominated Shapiro to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, making her the first female judge to serve in this district. Shapiro gained national recognition for several cases that she presided over, including Harris v. City of Philadelphia. The collection contains correspondence, case notes, speeches, and meeting minutes that document Shapiro's work on Harris v. City of Philadelphia, her service to the Eastern District Court, and her involvement in professional legal organizations.

Abstract:
The Judge Arlin Adams papers, 1945-2012, consist of correspondence, awards, and articles that document Judge Adams' research interests and community involvement. Arlin Adams graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1946. In 1969, President Nixon nominated Judge Adams to the Third Circuit Court. Judge Adams spent seventeen years on the bench before retiring in 1988 and returning to private practice at Schander Harrison Segal and Lewis. This collection primarily contains material from Judge Adams work with professional, charitable, and educational organizations after he retired from the federal bench. Other material includes research files from his time lecturing at Penn Law and source material for speeches that he wrote.
