Abstract:
The Moore Papers document Judge Thomas Moore's process co-writing Chapter 12 of Title 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. This collection contains research on family farm bankruptcies, historical material, competing legislation, legal analyses, speeches and testimonies. The papers are collected from 1979 to 1990 and contain many drafts of the Chapter 12 family farmer legislation adopted by Congress in 1987. Researchers should not that these papers are copies and the originals are located at East Carolina University's Special Collections Department.

Judge Thomas M. Moore was born in 1928 in Wilson, North Carolina. He earned his A. B. degree from the University of North Carolina in 1950, and his Juris Doctor in 1952. Moore served as a First Lieutenant in the army from 1952 to 1954. He was appointed as a bankruptcy judge in the Eastern District of North Carolina in November of 1960. Moore was a member of the American Bar Association, the American Trial Lawyers Association and the North Carolina Bar Association.

These papers span the years 1979 - 1990 and contain materials related to Moore's co-authorship of Chapter 12 legislation. They include research and historical material, various legislation, speeches and legal analyses.
