Overview and metadata sections

Arthur Beardsley was a professor of Engineering at Swarthmore College from 1872-1898 and Librarian of Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College from 1893 to 1917. The survey was sent to alumni in 1894 for a projected publication, "The Biographical Record of the Officers, Graduates, and Former Students of Swarthmore College." The detailed responses were the basis for The Alumni Historical Catalogue, 1873-1892, published by the College in 1905. A second installment was planned for the succeeding ten classes, 1893-1902.

The Garnet Band was an alumni committee composed of Walter Rittman, E. Pusey Passmore, J. F. Murray, Morris L. Clothier, and Owen Moon. In 1911 the group conducted a survey primarily concerning the proposed resumption of the Swarthmore-Haverford football game and publishing the Phoenix, the College newspaper, as a weekly.

The War Record survey was conducted in 1919 by a Service Record Committee of Swarthmore College in conjunction with the Dean's office to create a record of Swarthmore alumni military service in World War I.

This series contains alumni surveys conducted by the College and various committees, as well as procedures documents and computing instructions for the Alumni Records Office. It is organized into four series: 1. Arthur Beardsley Survey, 1894; 2. Garnet Band Survey, 1911; 3. War Record Survey, 1919; 4. Alumni Records Office.
