Overview and metadata sections

The Friends of Music and Dance at Swarthmore College was organized in 1981 as an initiative to alleviate costs of the College's Departments of Music and Dance. The organization supported these departments through the provision of summer workshop fellowships for students of music and dance, funds for new instruments, and improvements of performance facilities. Additionally, the organization provided support for the annual Swarthmore Music and Dance Festival. Around the year 2009, activities of the Friends of Music and Dance were consolidated into the fundraising operations of the Swarthmore College Advancement Office.

This collection consists of the administrative files of the Friends of Music and Dance Board. It contains correspondence, meeting minutes, publications, membership registries, and general business of Friends of Music and Dance, arranged roughly in chronological order from 1977 to 2008, with the bulk of materials dating from 1981 to 1985 and 2000 to 2008.

The records reflect the organization's involvement in obtaining donors to support the Swarthmore College Music and Dance Departments, as well as the organization's efforts to support individual students through awards of summer funding. The board of the organization was active in dispersing the funds they obtained to the Swarthmore Music and Dance departments and also to student applicants directly.

Most of the documents in this collection are administrative files, including the organization's by-laws and membership lists in addition to correspondence both among board members and to donors. Meeting minutes and board correspondence relate to the organization of fundraising events and the appointment of members to the board. Documents include background research and planning for board appointments, promotional events, and the coordination of events/programs sponsored by the organization. Publications consist of both materials distributed by the Friends of Music and Dance and also materials put out by comparable organizations at other institutions. Also included in the collection are records of scholarships and awards granted by Friends of Music and Dance, along with notes on programs and committees of the organization.
