David S. Cowden graduated with Honors from Swarthmore College in 1949, earning membership in Phi Beta Kaap. He earned his doctorate from Harvard University after serving in the Army in WWII.
He taught English literature at Swarthmore College from 1949 until his death in May 1983 with a special interest in the 19th century novel. He was active in the life of the College, serving on numerous committees. In 1977 he established the David S. Cowden Scholarship Fund.
Collection contains four unpublished manuscripts by David S. Cowden.
