Letters of John Ewer, located in London, to Owen Biddle (1737-1799), located in Philadelphia. Ewer was supplying Biddle, a Philadelphian merchant, with fabric of various kinds and patterns. Most of the letters deal with the shipping of this merchandise to Biddle and its payment. There are references to the increasing difficulties between Great Britain and the British colonies that would become the United States in Ewer's letters of 1775-1776.

Josiah White was a 19th-century engineer and the inventor of a method to bring coal down the Lehigh River, a tributary of the Delaware River in Pennsylvania. David Backon kept a journal during his time with the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confderacy) in 1974. Entries describe Bacon's journey to the Haudenosaunee territory, and interactions between himself and the members of the Haudenosaunee, as well as discussions between representatives from the United States and Six Nations governments concerning the treaty that was to determine the land rights of the Haudenosaunee after the end of the Revolutionary War. This letter is dated from Boston, Massachusetts, on April 3, 1797. It is signed by Benjamin Cobb and Benjamin Homer, both Boston residents, who owned the schooner Fair Lady. The letter is from the boat's owners and sent to the captain, Joshua Delano Jr., and Mr. Durant, a merchant. The ship was travelling from St. Croix to Havana, Cuba, to sell enslaved persons. Cope and Mendenhall letterbooks, 1788-1853 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of four volumes of business letter books authored by Thomas P. Cope (1768-1843) and his uncle and business partner Thomas Mendenhall (1759-1843). Thomas P. Cope trained under his uncle who was in the mercantile shipping business at the turn of the nineteenth century. Thomas P. Cope took over his uncle's business in 1821 and the succeeding three volumes of business letters are all authored by him. Cope established Philadelphia's first packet line, a small fleet of first-rate ships that offered regular freight and passenger service between Philadelphia and Liverpool. Cope was very involved in local politics; in 1837 he was a member of the Convention to amend the Constitution of Pennsylvania, he was the President of the Board of Trade and of the Mercantile Library, as well as a member of the first board of Haverford College. This volume was originally used as an account book, from 1794 to 1795, and was later repurposed as a diary or timeline of events, dated from 1826 to 1915. The section of the volume that acts as an account book includes an index, in which individuals are organized alphabetically, and entries record amounts paid or owned, the goods purchased, and the currency used. Goods listed are mainly dry goods and lumber, including: flour, "middling" (bulk goods of medium grade), hog feed, cornmeal, buckwheat, rye meal, and wooden boards. The second section of the volume acts as a timeline and diary for Joshua L. Baily. Included are entries concerning current events, such as terms of various presidents, the Orthodox-Hicksite separation, the emergence of the "Mormons" and their migration west, records of correspondence sent and received, and events in the Civil War and World War I.

Abstract:
This collection is comprised of the single volume letterbook of the Hoskins family. The primary correspondents in the volume are members of the Hoskins family, though quite a number of the letters are directed to Benjamin H. Warder. Most of the letters were written in the 18th century, but some are from the 19th century. A number of them are religious in nature, while others deal with service in the ministry or visiting Friends, and some deal with states of health and mortality. The letters cover a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to Quakers and trade in Barbados, outbreaks of small pox, the opening of Native American schools, and the Orthodox-Hicksite separation. Some prominent letter writers include: Martha Allinson, George Dillwyn, Thomas Evans, Rebecca Jones, James Mott, Elizabeth Robson, Charity Rotch, John Warder, Nicholas Waln, and Daniel Wheeler.

This collection is comprised of the two folders of materials related to a group of Quakers exiled in Virigina during the American Revolutionary War, from 1777 to 1778. The collection includes originals, photocopies, and transcripts of the materials. The materials are largely composed of correspondence, but also include decisions made by Congress, financial records of the exiles, and a single photograph of the Isaac Brown house, where Quaker exiles were held in Virginia in 1777. According to a note on the back of the first page of the photostatic copy, the original manuscript was located at the Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island, as of 1932, and that it had previously belonged to a woman named Mary Olney.

This collection contains over 240 mainly incoming manuscript letters addressed to Thomas Evans, a Philadelphia druggist, author, editor, Orthodox Quaker minister of Philadelphia and, in 1833, one the founders of Haverford College. The letters, 1823-1859, contain material on his very active role in the Society of Friends and the problems of religious doctrine before and during the Hicksite and Wilburite schisms within the Quaker faith. The collection also includes papers and legal documents from Evans' role as trustee for multiple Quaker estates.

Papers include correspondence of thirty-two members and relatives of the Hartshorne family. -Of special interest are the medical notes, articles, and correspondence, 1819-1845, of Joseph Hartshorne, M.D. These are noteworthy because of his many innovation in surgery, such as the use of animal ligatures, plus his detailed descriptions of treatments for various ailments. -The correspondence of Anna C. Hartshorne covering her missionary work in Japan -Henry Hartshorne's "Letters from Japan," printed in the Friend Review, 1893-1894, plus sermons, etc., given by him while in Japan with Anna, 1893-1897. -The bulk of the collection consists of the correspondence, medical papers, literary works, etc., of Henry Hartshorne, M.D., son of Joseph and father of Anna. -also include genealogical material on the Bonsall, Hartshorne, Saunders, Yarnall, and Cope families as well as photographs.
