The New Jersey Association for Helping the Indians, while it has a Constitution and motto (Isaiah 58:6, 7, 9), never went any further than that. Its intention was to help the Lenni Lenape in New Jersey get two thousand acres to live and work on, in Monmouth, Burlingotn, or Glouster Counties. The Association had both women and men subscribers.
This collection contains two copies of the Constitution for the New Jersey Association for Helping Indians, 1757. One copy has signatures of subscribers who gave money for the cause, including John Woolman. The other copy was found among records at Haddonfield Monthly Meeting, Haddonfield, New Jersey.
The copy with signatures was given to Haverford College by Caroline Allinson in 1936. The second copy, with no signatures, was transferred from the library to the Special Collections in 1938.
