Overview and metadata sections
The Matlacks were a Quaker family with deep roots in the Pennsylvania region. Asa Matlack (1783-1851) was the son of Reuben Matlack (1757-1808) and Elizabeth Coles. He married Tamar Matlack (1783-1850).
These papers include journals, diaries, account books, commonplace books, and poetry of the Matlack family, as well as other families (Roberts and Stackhouse, among others), plus three boxes of letters, genealogical materials, and other papers. Included among the papers is "Notes Taken from Samuel Spavold's Testimony," signed by Anthony Benezet (n.d.); a copy of George Keith's Journal of Travels...on the Continent of North America, printed in London, 1706; an announcement of a visit he will pay to Pennsylvania by Elias Hicks (n.d.); an account of the manner in which he met his wife [Phoebe Harrison or Alice Hodgson(?)], by Phineas Pemberton (n.d.); and a letter to Samuel Emlen, describing the death of John Woolman by Esther Tuke written in York, 10mo. 14, 1772. There is also a map of the Meetings within the Limits of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1897.
