Overview and metadata sections
Ann Head Warder (1758-1829), the daughter of John Head and Ann Wheeler, was born in Ipswich, England, in 1758. In 1779, she married John Warder, a wealthy Philadelphia-born merchant who moved to London in 1776 to secure his family's business during the American Revolution. The Warders moved temporarily to Philadelphia in 1783, and decided to make Philadelphia their permanent home in 1788. They had a total of ten children, seven of whom lived until adulthood. Ann Head Warder never returned to England after 1788; she died in Philadelphia in 1829.
This collection includes three bound volumes of handwritten transcriptions and extracts of Ann Head Warder's diaries, originally written between 1786 and 1789. The transcriptions were written by later family members during the 19th century. Diary entries describe Ann's voyage to America and her travels within New York and Pennsylvania, including people she met, Quaker meetings she attended, and social calls made during her travels. Ann often refers to her husband and eldest son Jeremiah in her entries, as they accompanied her on the trip, and regularly comments upon differences between accommodations, styles of dress, and child-rearing practices between England and America.
