Abstract:
Primarily the letters of the interconnected Philadelphia-area Quaker families, Allen and Roberts, in the period 1846-1931. The a large potrion of letters were are from Sarah H. Roberts Allen, Susan Janney Allen, and Lillie Allen, as well as Lizzie Roberts, though there are a considerable number from Samuel Allen, inventor of some agricultural tools as well as the "flexible flyer" sled.

Josiah White was a 19th-century engineer and the inventor of a method to bring coal down the Lehigh River, a tributary of the Delaware River in Pennsylvania. Joshua L. and Theodate L. Baily diaries, 1845-1916 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The diaries span the majority of Baily's adult life. As a young man, Baily was very involved in the Philadelphia community, and many of his early entries are related to the Philadelphia Historical Society, the Eromathean society, the Pennsylvania Prison Society, which advocated for the health and safety of incarcerated people and prison reform, The Philadelphia Society for Employment and Instruction of the Poor, and the Moyamensing House of Industry. In later entries, Baily is largely concerned with temperance efforts, prohibition, and city government. In old age, Baily's focus shifts to news of his family, and he increasingly records international affairs and political or military events, particularly in the years leading up to World War I. Two volumes, for the years 1879 and 1880, are the diaries of Theodate Lang Baily, the wife of Joshua Baily's. Her diaries largely focus on social calls and family news, as well as descriptions of her husband and children and their health.

This collection contains over 240 mainly incoming manuscript letters addressed to Thomas Evans, a Philadelphia druggist, author, editor, Orthodox Quaker minister of Philadelphia and, in 1833, one the founders of Haverford College. The letters, 1823-1859, contain material on his very active role in the Society of Friends and the problems of religious doctrine before and during the Hicksite and Wilburite schisms within the Quaker faith. Abstract:
This volume was originally used as an account book, from 1794 to 1795, and was later repurposed as a diary or timeline of events, dated from 1826 to 1915. The section of the volume that acts as an account book includes an index, in which individuals are organized alphabetically, and entries record amounts paid or owned, the goods purchased, and the currency used. Goods listed are mainly dry goods and lumber, including: flour, "middling" (bulk goods of medium grade), hog feed, cornmeal, buckwheat, rye meal, and wooden boards. The second section of the volume acts as a timeline and diary for Joshua L. Baily. Included are entries concerning current events, such as terms of various presidents, the Orthodox-Hicksite separation, the emergence of the "Mormons" and their migration west, records of correspondence sent and received, and events in the Civil War and World War I.
