Overview and metadata sections

Joseph Miller Downing was born in West Whiteland, Pennsylvania, in 1846. He entered Haverford in 1861, and graduated in 1865. He was a iron manufacturer. In 1880, he married Hannah Pennock Steele of Coatesville, Pennsylvania. They had two children, T.S. Downing and G.V. Downing. Downing died in Elsmere, Delaware, in 1915.

This album contains 22 photographs. It starts with photographs of the Haverford College class of 1865: a group photo and individual portraits of the students with their names written in pencil. These students are: John Richardson Bringhurst, Edward Taylor Brown, James Anthony Chase, David Holder Nichols, Henry Williams Sharpless, George Smith Jr., Robery Barney Taber, Allen Clapp Thomas, Benjamin Augustus Vail, and Caleb Cresson Wistar (the other member of their class, Arthur Haviland, according to the catalog of Haverford matriculates in 1922, is not pictured in the group photograph nor in the portraits). Then there are portraits of infants and women (unidentified), an image of Haverford College, a group of men carrying guns, and a painting with farm animals in it.
