Abstract:
Haverford Township is a suburb of Philadelphia situated near the wealthy "Main Line" west of the city. It encompasses the community of Havertown and parts of Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Ardmore, Drexel Hill, and Wynnewood in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The Haverford Township Historical Society photograph collection, 1895-2014, depicts the people, buildings, and scenery of Haverford Township (Delaware County, Pennsylvania). Buildings, especially historic sites, are particularly well represented, but there are also family photographs and photographs of other subjects.

Douglas V. and Dorothy M. Steere papers, 1896-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Douglas and Dorothy Steere were prominent figures of the Quaker movement in the twentieth century, and deeply committed to the causes of peace and spiritual enrichment. This commitment is evident in their involvement with Quaker-led relief work after World War II, Quaker spiritual retreats, international diplomacy, and Dorothy's work with the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Douglas taught philosophy at several institutions including Haverford College, and published extensively on topics in Quaker philosophy and history. This collection contains considerable material related to Douglas's work as a writer, professor, and diplomat. Given his role as a distinguished figure within 20th century Quakerism, this material is also relevant to researchers interested in recent Quaker history as a whole. There is also some fascinating material produced and collected by Dorothy related to the Civil Rights movement, including a letter from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Abstract:
James Wood (1839-1925) was "interested in education, philanthropy, in the various branches of agriculture, in archaeology, history, Indian lore, anthropology, science, in prison reform and above all, in the Bible and religion," (ABS, 2). He was also a business man, serving as President of the Genesee Salt Company in Piffard, New York. The James Wood papers are divided into twelve series: "Biographical Material:" "Agriculture;" Business and Financial Material;" "Collected Quaker Material;" "Correspondence;" "Hugh Barbour Writings and Talks regarding James Wood;" "Journals;" "Organizations;" "Photographs and Albums;" "Political Involvement;" Prison Reform;" and lastly, "Writings by James Wood." This collection contains many materials, including correspondence, photographs, record books, awards, and printed material such as newspapers and pamphlets. Abstract:
The Sarah Wistar Rhoads family papers indicate strong relationships and family ties that spanned the 19th and 20th centuries. Sarah Wistar Rhoads (1839-1920) married William Gibbons Rhoads (1838-1880) on November 28, 1866. At that time, the Rhoads, Gibbons and Wistar families began corresponding, the result being an outstanding collection illustrating family support, friendship and love. These papers include correspondence, financial records, diaries and journals, memorabilia, classwork and notes, copied poems, prayers, sermons and verses, memorials, genealogical research, Quaker material and photographs. Reinhardt, Hawley and Hewes family papers, 1762-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Reinhardt, Hawley, Hewes and Meredith families are tied together through marriage and their Quaker faith across multiple generations. William Dell Reinhardt, a University of Pennsylvania graduate and doctor, married Rebecca Hawley, a teacher. They had six children: Jesse Hawley Reinhardt, Mary Bailey Reinhardt, Esther Meredith Reinhardt, Lydia Ludwig Reinhardt, Elizabeth Christina Reinhardt, and David Jones Reinhardt. David Jones Reinhardt married Anna Margaret Hewes in 1896. These individuals created the bulk of the material contained within this collection. Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles family papers, 1840-1882 1791-1930 (inclusive) 1840-1882 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles family papers house the correspondence of a Quaker family who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Woodbury, New Jersey; Wilmington, Delaware; and other surrounding areas from approximately 1840 to 1882. A majority of the letters were written to or by Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles; her husband, John Smith Hilles; and other Tatum or Hilles family members. There is a small sampling of assorted family papers, dating from 1825 to 1901. Included, among other items, are school report cards of William Samuel Hilles from Haverford College and an 1834 memoir of Anne Cooper Tatum, Sarah Hilles' mother. In addition, there are deeds to properties owned by the Hilles family in Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania from 1791 to 1886.

There are three scrapbooks in the collection. The first (1896) deals primarily with the Haverford cricket team. The second (1905-1906) focuses on the Haverford football team, with additional clippings for Haverford cricket, relays, gymnastics, debate, and soccer, as well as clippings about general college happenings. The third (1906-1907) also focuses on Haverford football, including articles on football games, recruits, alumni activity, and pictures of members of the team.

Abstract:
The first scrapbook (1888-1900) is a collection of material from immediately after Scattergood graduated from Haverford College. This includes newspaper clippings, primarily regarding sports, invitations to athletic events, glee club performances, junior class exercises, and graduations. Additionally, there are materials from alumni association events, for both Haverford College and Forsythe School. There are also a number of small pictures from his time at Haverford. The second scrapbook also has numberous athletics clippings and invitations. Additionally, there are letters and pictures from numerous European destination (i.e. London, Amsterdam). Materials from Harvard Club and the Pennsylvania Forestry Association are also present.

Abstract:
This small volume contains songs and poems collected by Thomas S. Downing Jr. (1852–1926) during his time at Haverford College. Downing, the son of a prosperous farmer in West Whiteland, Chester County, Pennsylvania, attended Haverford from 1869 through 1872. After graduating, Downing returned to Chester County and became a farmer. Various Haverford students wrote verses in Downing's songbook, some traditional and some original compositions. They cover a wide variety of topics and offer insight into the attitudes of Haverford students in the early 1870s.

This album contains about ten entries of autographs that were pasted into a volume between 1868 and 1871. These entries contain people's names and sometimes the date and their college affiliation. Most of the entries in this album are song lyrics. At the bottom of the lyrics are names of Haverford students, the year the lyrics were added to the album, their graduation year, and their hometown.

Howard Comfort was a Quaker merchant in Philadelphia, and often traveled between Philadelphia and various cities in Great Britain on business. Each volume is a small "pocket diary," and entries include lists of assignments and readings for class, notes, and quoted excerpts from materials Comfort had read, as well as descriptions of social calls and Quaker meetings.

A collection of poems compiled by Charles Wood during his time at Haverford College. These poems were transcribed by Wood and other classmates from 1866 to 1870, and detail religious, spiritual, and patriotic poems at the time. After his time at Haverford, Wood went on to recieve his Doctorate of Divinity in 1885, but records in the commonplace book stop after 1870.

Charles Roberts autograph albums, 1805-1867 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The smaller autograph albums contain signatures of Haverford College students. In the 1860-1862 autograph album, most signatures are accompanied with respective hometowns and the date of the signature; one signature includes a quote. In the 1860-1864 album, there are pictures for most signatories, but few hometown entries; one signature includes a quote. The larger 1860 autograph album is comprised of miscellaneous historical documents dating from the early-to-mid 19th century. Includes military summons, letters, trade documents, and assorted signatures. Several pages are blank and many appear to have once held additional documentation and portraits, but only glue on/holes in pages indicate their former presence. Materials not arranged chronologically and appear to have no discernable order.
