Overview and metadata sections

Franklin Whitall was born October 11, 1871, in Germantown, Pennsylvania, to James Whitall (Haverford College class of 1853; Board of Managers 1857-1896) and Mary Wistar Cope. He attended Haverford College from 1889 to 1893. During his time at Haverford, he was very active on campus. He played on multiple athletic teams and still found time to take on other endeavors, such as Glee Club. After graduating from Haverford, he attended Harvard University, starting in the fall of 1893. He attended Harvard for one academic year before drowning in Boston Harbor on May 13, 1894.

The essays are primarily assignments for an English 12 class at Harvard University. There is coursework from both Fall 1893 and Spring 1894. Additionally, there are some personal reflections from Spring 1894 and several undated works. Finally, there is a chart from the American Anthropometric Association that plots out Whitall's weight, height, girth, depth, breadth, and strength on October 24, 1889 and May 8, 1890.

Contents are arranged in chronological order.
