Alexis Thomas Cope was born in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, on February 5, 1850, to William Drinker Cope and Susan Newbold. He entered Haverford College in 1864, and graduated in 1868. He was a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. He married Elizabeth Stewardson Cope on May 27, 1875. Alexis Cope died in Susquehanna County on September 22, 1883.
