Albert Lang Baily was born in Vassalboro, Maine, on June 22, 1859, to Joshua Longstreth Baily and Theodate Lang. He entered Haverford College in 1874, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During his time at Haverford, Baily was the "Spoon Man", class secretary, secretary and president of Athenæum, won the Cricket Fielding Belt, and was on the cricket First Eleven. After graduating in 1878, he became a dry goods commission merchant. He married Eliza Montell Lycet on April 2, 1888. Together they lived in Haverford, Pennsylvania and had one child, Albert Lang Baily Jr., who also attended Haverford College (class of 1912).
