Abstract:
The collection presents a detailed picture of several generations of Smiths, Masons and Ewings -Philadelphia families, at least some of whom were Quakers, portraying their daily lives and concerns. The primary authors are Edith Mason Smith (1857-1944) and her husband, Joshua Cowgill Smith (1857-1911), their children Elizabeth Newlin Smith (1884-1977) and her husband J.M. Sharpless Ewing ( - 1960), Mildred Smith (1888-1973) and Jean Smith (1883-1966). The concentration of the collection is the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.

Abstract:
Records deal with the work of Friends in running mission stations in Oklahoma to the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma (Bah Kho-je), the Modoc Nation, the Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma, the Otoe-Missouria Tribe of Indians, the Shawnee Tribe, the Osage Nation (Wahzhazhe) and other Native American peoples. Letters from superintendents and missionaries in the field describe the difficulties and experiences of Friends in their work. Topics discussed include attempts to Christianize Native Americans, improve living conditions, Native American education, use of peyote and alcohol, disease, Native American dances, conflicts with other religious denominations, protection of Native Americans from schemes and abuses.

Rayner W. Kelsey (1879-1934) was professor of history at Haverford College (1909-1934). In 1922 he was named curator of the Quaker collection at Haverford. Kelsey was the author of Friends and the Indians (1917) and editor of the journal of Theophile Cazenove (1740-1811). This collection is comprised of notes, extracts and transcripts from primary and secondary sources related to American colonial history and Pennsylvania agricultural history of the colonial and early Federal periods. Includes 2 file card boxes of notes, arranged by topic by Kelsey, of his research on PA agricultural history. Abstract:
This collection spans approximately 200 years, from the late 1700s to the late 1900s, and five generations of the Morris-Shinn-Maier family, which are traced through matrilineal and patrilineal lines. They were prominent Quaker businessmen and lawyers in the Philadelphia area, and a large portion of the collection is dedicated to their legal and business material, as well as a great deal of very detailed financial material. There is also a quantity of personal material, namely diaries and correspondence, and material from philanthropic work done by later generations. Sydney Hunt collection, 1930-2004 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of 101 glass lantern slides, taken by Sydney Hunt and C. (Khalil) Raad in the 1930s in Palestine. Sydney Hunt traveled through Palestine and Germany in the 1920s. He purchased some of the slides from Raad, a professional photographer, and took others himself. Also included in this collection is a draft of Hunt's book The Joyful Traveler: Wanderings of Sydney Hunt, 1932-1934, with hand corrections. Hunt had written this manuscript in the 1930s, but by the time he had finished, publishers were not interested in happy recollections about Germany. It was not published, therefore, until 2003. Hunt used a number of the slides and other images in this collection to illustrate the book once it was published.

Abstract:
The Vaux family was deeply involved with Quaker and Native American affairs throughout much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. George Vaux, Sr. was involved in Quaker activity through the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and other Quaker meetings throughout the world (including Antigua and London). Both George Vaux, Jr. and Mary Morris Vaux Walcott, his sister, served as commissioners for the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners. This organization was established by the United States Congress in 1869 to watch over federal policies regarding Native Americans and to make certain that treaty obligations were fulfilled, especially in reference to supply deliveries. George Vaux, III also worked as the treasurer of the Indian Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. Abstract:
Douglas and Dorothy Steere were prominent figures of the Quaker movement in the twentieth century, and deeply committed to the causes of peace and spiritual enrichment. This commitment is evident in their involvement with Quaker-led relief work after World War II, Quaker spiritual retreats, international diplomacy, and Dorothy's work with the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Douglas taught philosophy at several institutions including Haverford College, and published extensively on topics in Quaker philosophy and history. This collection contains considerable material related to Douglas's work as a writer, professor, and diplomat. Given his role as a distinguished figure within 20th century Quakerism, this material is also relevant to researchers interested in recent Quaker history as a whole. There is also some fascinating material produced and collected by Dorothy related to the Civil Rights movement, including a letter from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Abstract:
The Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles family papers house the correspondence of a Quaker family who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Woodbury, New Jersey; Wilmington, Delaware; and other surrounding areas from approximately 1840 to 1882. A majority of the letters were written to or by Sarah Cooper Tatum Hilles; her husband, John Smith Hilles; and other Tatum or Hilles family members. There is a small sampling of assorted family papers, dating from 1825 to 1901. Included, among other items, are school report cards of William Samuel Hilles from Haverford College and an 1834 memoir of Anne Cooper Tatum, Sarah Hilles' mother. In addition, there are deeds to properties owned by the Hilles family in Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois and Pennsylvania from 1791 to 1886.

Jones also provides descriptions of the children she teaches at the school.
