Overview and metadata sections

William Kennard (1787-1862) was a Quaker minister of Somerset Monthly Meeting. He married Ruth Anna Lytle, and the couple had one child, William Kennard, in 1808.

This collection is composed of the single, handwritten diary of William Kennard. Kennard records his travels through Ohio, Michigan (specifically the newly established Adrian Monthly Meeting), New York, Canada, Connecticut, Vermont, and Pennsylvania, including travel by rail, steam and canal boat, and coach, and comments on visits to Quaker Meetings and with Friends. The diary gives a view of mid-19th century United States and Canada through Kennard's eyes.
