Richard Bunker Singer graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1939, served as a United States Navy flight surgeon in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and in 1952 accepted a position in life insurance underwriting at New England Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston, MA. The Richard Bunker Singer Papers document the family life and professional career of Dr. Singer. The collection has been organized into six series: Correspondence, Personal, Professional, Works By, Photographs, and Awards.

The Savoy Company is the oldest amateur theater company dedicated to the production of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. Abstract:
Maggie Paley is a prolific journalist and author. Her works include Bad Manners, a novel, and The Book of the Penis, a book of popular nonfiction. Paley was a well-connected participant in a wide variety of NYC cultural life during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, and this collection contains her own writing, correspondence with notable figures, and cultural material she collected. Paley worked as an editor at The Paris Review and a staff writer for LIFE and The Saturday Evening Post before establishing a career as a freelance journalist. Since the 1960's she has been a social fixture in New York artistic circles, and was a close acquaintance of such figures as Jill Krementz, Harry Matthews, and Rachael Hadas.

Abstract:
The Judge Joe Lee papers, 1961-2012, consist of material from Lee's active involvement in bankruptcy organizations and legislation. Joe Lee received his law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1955. He served as counsel to the Congressional Labor Subcommittee for the U.S. House of Representatives before being appointed a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge on September 1, 1961. He was one of the longest serving bankruptcy judges in the nation and played a pivotal role in the enactment of the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978. The collection includes correspondence, minutes, and reports from the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, drafts of bills and correspondence regarding bankruptcy legislation, and Lee's writings on the history of bankruptcy law.

Abstract:
The Judge Arlin Adams papers, 1945-2012, consist of correspondence, awards, and articles that document Judge Adams' research interests and community involvement. Arlin Adams graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1946. In 1969, President Nixon nominated Judge Adams to the Third Circuit Court. Judge Adams spent seventeen years on the bench before retiring in 1988 and returning to private practice at Schander Harrison Segal and Lewis. This collection primarily contains material from Judge Adams work with professional, charitable, and educational organizations after he retired from the federal bench. Other material includes research files from his time lecturing at Penn Law and source material for speeches that he wrote.

Daniel Hoffman (1923-2013) was an American poet and essayist whose lengthy career at the University of Pennsylvania (beginning in 1966) included acting as a dissertation director for Judith Moffett (born 1942), an American poet, English professor, Swedish translator, and author of twelve books. The collection covers the period from 1970, when Moffett was still a student at the University of Pennsylvania, to 2012, the year before Hoffman died. It includes letters and other correspondence addressed from Hoffman to Moffett, drafts and manuscripts of Hoffman's literary work, and a manuscript and posthumously published copy of a book of poems by Hoffman's wife, Elizabeth McFarland.

Abstract:
Edward St. John Gorey (1925-2000) was an American author and artist, primarily known for his children's stories and illustrations of children's books, although he also produced adult-oriented work. Sometime around 1977, Gorey established a company, Doomed Enterprises, to handle all matters related to publication and licensing of his work. This collection consists primarily of records of Andreas Brown's and the Gotham Book Mart's records relating to Doomed Enterprises, documents relating to the execution of the Edward Gorey estate after 2000 (for which Brown served as an executor), and other documents and artifacts documenting Gorey's public image and legacy.

John B. Thayer memorial collection of the sinking of the Titanic, 1912-2012 (inclusive)

John "Jack" Borland Thayer (1894-1945) and his mother, Marian Longstreth Morris Thayer (circa 1872-1944), survived the sinking of the Titanic along with only 705 other people. His father, John Borland Thayer (1862-1912) died during the only voyage of the "unsinkable" ship. The John B. Thayer memorial collection of the sinking of the Titanic, contains first-hand accounts of the sinking, Thayer family material, and more recent material documenting the continued interest in and efforts to memorialize the tragedy.

This collection consists of the personal papers of Martha Emily Shaw, Philadelphia native and graduate of the Training School for Nurses of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. This collection contains a volume of her lecture notes from 1911. Shaw served as a nurse during World War I at the University of Pennsylvania's Base Hospital No. 20 in France. Upon her return from the war, she became an active member of the American Legion’s Helen Fairchild Post #412. Her activities with the Post are documented in this collection's photographs.

Abstract:
Located in Tuscany, Italy, the site of San Pietro d’Asso was discovered on a hill during a survey of the territory of Montalcino. In July 2010, fourteen undergraduates began the six week Penn summer school excavation. The excavation, led by Drs. Robert Hodges, Stefano Campana, and Michelle Hobart and supported by the University of Siena and the Comune of Montalcino, set out to establish what exactly the hilltop site was. The textual records consist of .25 linear feet of correspondence, financial records, reflections on the excavation, tourist brochures, drawings and photographs, and various publications. The Honorable Samuel L. Bufford is a former United States Bankruptcy Judge in the Central District of California, where he served from 1985 to 2010 and presided over nearly 100,000 cases. After graduating with a B.A. from Wheaton College in Illinois, Judge Bufford earned his law degree from the University of Michigan, where he was an editor of the Michigan Law Review and of the Journal of Law Reform and a Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of Texas. The Margy and Martin Meyerson collection consists of over 100 items, including ephemeral pamphlets, maps, photographs, brochures, bulletins, policy papers, booklists, investment prospectuses, tourist industry material, as well as government publications, off-prints, monographs and individual serials volumes, documenting the early decades of the modern State of Israel. Abstract:
MASCA, or the Museum Applied Science Center for Archaeology, was established in 1961 by a grant from the National Science Foundation. MASCA was modeled after the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art in Oxford. From the time of its inception in 1961, MASCA, along with the Radiocarbon Laboratory, made a number of contributions to radiocarbon dating and other dating and materials analysis techniques including thermoluminescence, xeroradiography, Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analysis of metals, analysis of faunal and plant remains and other projects either within the museum or remotely at archaeological sites. MASCA was disassembled in 2009.

Abstract:
Dr. Cecil L. Striker was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended Oberlin College for his undergraduate degree. While working on his M.A. and Ph.D. at The Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, Striker supplemented his studies in programs at Harvard University, the University of Marburg, and Technische Hochschule Munich. Dr. Striker came to the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 as an Associate Professor in the Department of the History of Art. Full professorship was bestowed in 1978. Striker represented Dumbarton Oaks during restoration and investigative field work at Kalenderhane Camii in Istanbul. The materials relate to Striker's major area of work, the archaeology and architectural history of the Late Antique, Early Christian, Byzantine and Medieval periods (fourth through 15th centuries A.D.). Its geographic focus is on the lands of the former Byzantine Empire (modern Turkey, Greece, ex-Yugoslavia and Albania). There is also some material from Latin West.

The business records of the Maternity Care Coalition (MCC), a Philadelphia-based organization devoted to preventing infant mortality. Founded in 1980, the Maternity Care Coalition continued to operate at the time of the donation in 2009. The bulk of the materials comprise community outreach and client education materials, research materials, and publications. Also present within the collection are newspaper clippings, a number of media appearances captured on VHS, reel-to-reel, and audio cassettes, as well as a series of photographs that span the years 1985 to 2005.

Judge Bihary received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School in 1975. From 1987-2003, she served as a judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Northern District of Georgia. In 2003, Judge Bihary was sworn in as Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Northern District of Georgia. She served this position from 2003 until her retirement in May of 2012. The Judge Joyce Bihary Papers, 1999-2009, includes materials created, collected, and received by Judge Bihary from two periods of her career. First, materials from the 1999 Debtor Education Program in Atlanta, Georgia which contains information regarding American bankruptcy in the mid to late 1990's. Second, the collection includes information regarding the proposed mortgage "cramdown" legislation specifically referencing H.R. 1106 during 2008-2009. The Gordion Project collection documents the University of Pennsylvania survey and excavation of the ancient site of Gordion in central Turkey from 1947 until 2008. Kenneth Sams (1988-2008) as well as fundraising and publication records during this period. Significant gaps and omissions in documentation occur after about 1990. Tikal Project, 1948-2008 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The planning for the Tikal Project began in the mid 1940s when Museum President Percy C. Madeira along with engineer John Dimick and Board member Samuel B. Eckert conceived of a ten year long expedition to the Maya site in the dense forest region of Guatemala. Previous expeditions to investigate the Maya necessarily focused on more accessible sites such as Piedras Negras, Copan, Uxmal and Chichen Itza. Following the construction of a landing strip by the Guatemalan Air Force in 1950 the first scientists arrived in January 1956 for what would turn out to be a thirteen year expedition. For ten of the thirteen years, the project was directed by William Robertson Coe who accomplished major excavations in the Great Plaza, North Terrace and Acropolis sections of the project. Coe also conceptualized the data collection system and reporting guidelines that resulted in the publication of the seventeen volume Tikal Reports. The Oral History Project was begun by the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ) at its 2004 Annual Meeting. The purpose of the project was to record interviews in which past presidents of the NCBJ reminisced about the organization and the role they played in it. The project later expanded to encompass oral histories of prominent bankruptcy judges. The collection chiefly includes oral histories recorded with past presidents of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. In the midst of World War II, the American Law Institute convened a committee in 1941 to study the international community's position regarding human rights law. The committee's charge was to develop a Statement of Essential Human Rights. William Draper Lewis, then Director of the American Law Institute, was chair of the committee and the project's most outspoken advocate, touring the world to deliver speeches on the importance of a code of basic human rights. International in scope and in participation, the committee included representatives from Britain, Canada, China, France, pre-Nazi Germany, Italy, India, Latin America, Poland, Soviet Russia, Spain, and Syria. Museum Building Records, 1892-2007 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The first section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum building, designed to exhibit the large archaeological and ethnological collections amassed in the preceding twelve years, was opened in 1899. The architects, Wilson Eyre, Jr., Cope and Stewardson, and Frank Miles Day and Brother, envisioned this first section as the westernmost wing of an immense building, at least three times the size of the present museum. The second section, the Harrison Rotunda, consisting of the exhibit hall and auditorium, was added in 1915. It featured a dome constructed by Rafael Guastavino. In 1926 the Eckley B. Coxe, Jr. Egyptian Wing opened, followed by the Administrative Wing (nowadays called the "Sharpe" Wing after the third floor gallery bearing that name) in 1929. Building activity stopped after 1929 until construction began on the Academic Wing in 1969. Deborah A. DeMott completed her B.A. in 1970 from Swarthmore College and received her Juris Doctorate from New York University in 1973. DeMott spent her early years in DuBois, Pennsylvania. She served as articles editor of the New York University Law Review. DeMott began her professional career with a judicial clerkship in a federal court in New York City, and later practiced with a large law firm in that city, until she joined the Duke law faculty in 1975. In 1989, she received the Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award from Duke University. Professor DeMott served as the Reporter for the American Law Institute's Restatement (Third) of Agency, published in 2006. Abstract:
Keith R. DeVries (1937-2006) taught Greek and Anatolian archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania from 1969 until his retirement in 2004. His research included Greek fibulae, pottery, and homosexuality. His early field work included excavations at Ischia and Corinth during the 1960's (not included in this collection), but the bulk of his work was at Gordion (Turkey) from 1971 through 2003, where he was also project director from 1974 through 1987. He continued his professional research, especially related to Gordion and Greek homosexuality, until his death in 2006.

Abstract:
Ellen L. Kohler (1916-2008) taught classical archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania (Roman and Etruscan) from 1958 until 1980. Her early field work included excavations at Kourion, Cyprus (1949, 1951, 1955) and at Sybaris (1962), but her principal work was at Gordion, Turkey, where she assisted project director Rodney Young and later Keith DeVries during 18 seasons variously between 1950 and 1982, and in 1992. Her research interests included early Phrygian animal-style carvings in wood and ivory, but she later worked almost exclusively with the inventory of 6th to 7th century Gordion tumulus burial objects. Her principal report, The Lesser Phrygian Tumuli, Part 1, was published in 1995. Dr. Kohler also served as Assistant Curator of the Mediterranean Section of the University Museum from 1958 to 1965, Registrar from 1965 to 1977, and Research Associate from 1968 until her death in 2008. Terence E. Carroll (1925-2009) was a public health advocate active in Detroit and Washington, D.C. He worked for the Michigan Credit Union League, the League Life Insurance Company, the National Institute on Rehabilitation and Health Services, the Comprehensive Health Planning Council of Southeastern Michigan, Public Health Information Services, and the National Association for Public Health Policy. The collection consists of personal materials, personal and professional correspondence, material on affiliated public health organizations, writings and speeches by Carroll and others, and photographs of Carroll's professional life.
