Doris M. Donovan was born in Hartford, CT on July 13, 1915, and died on June 18, 2004. he graduated from St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. She received her Associates degree from Middlesex Community College in 1987 at the age of 72.
Donovan served in the Army Nurse Corps for 12 years; during World War II she was Chief Nurse of the l09th Evacuation Hospital in Europe. The Unit was awarded 5 Battle Stars and the Unit Citation. Donovan was awarded the Bronze Star for her role during the European Campaign. Retiring from the Army Nurse Corps as a Major, her name is inscribed on the Women's Memorial in Washington, DC as a Charter Member. She is also memorialized on the new World War II Memorial recently dedicated in Washington, DC.
Following her military service, Donovan continued her nursing profession at Mt. Sinai Hospital for 30 years as evening and night supervisor. Following her retirement from Mt. Sinai she continued her nursing career caring for substance abuse clients until 1996.
She was a member of The American Nurses Association, Connecticut Nurses Association, St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae, Life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2138 and the Connecticut Unit of The Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.

Series 1 contains documents regarding the military service of Doris M. Donovan, both official and unofficial records. Items also include histories and memoirs written by people who served at the 109th Evacuation Hospital where Donovan was stationed.
Series 2 contains photographas primarily taken by Donovan during her service in World War II. Photographs include those of the camp, trips during leave, and those of her unit in France, Germany, and Czechoslovak.

Camp Sutton, located in North Carolina, was where most of the staff trained with the 246th Station Hospital before being sent overseas.
