Martha Emily Shaw (1877-1944), RN, was born November 3, 1877 in Manayunk, Pennsylvania. She was admitted to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Training School for Nurses in the fall of 1910. In March of 1918 she was mobilized with the University of Pennsylvania’s 20th Base Hospital. After receiving military training at Ellis Island, she was stationed in Châtel-Guyon, Puy de Dome, France. In 1919 she transferred to the 49th Evacuation Hospital in Coblenz, Germany. After returning to the United States in the early 1920s, Shaw joined the Helen Fairchild Post #412 of the American Legion. She was an active member, attending many conventions in the U.S. and Europe through the 1920s and 30s. Shaw died July 31, 1944.
This collection consists of the personal papers of Martha Emily Shaw, Philadelphia native and graduate of the Training School for Nurses of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The collection includes her 1911 course lecture notes, photographs taken while she served with the University’s Base Hospital No. 20 in France during World War I, and materials concerning her participation in the American Legion’s Helen Fairchild Post #412.

Collection Inventory
The notebook containing Shaw’s 1911 lecture notes from her time as a student at the Training School for Nurses of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania also contains a ledger of personal expenses covering the period 1926-1929.
