Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Friends Peace Committee and its predecessors (1891-2015), 1891-2007 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Friends Peace Committee (FPC) of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting was formed in 1933 by the merger of similar committees that had been established in 1892 by the Race Street Yearly Meeting (Hicksite) and in 1916 by the Arch Street Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) in Philadelphia. Since 1933, the committee has undergone a series of structural changes, perhaps most strikingly under the direction of Executive Secretary George Hardin from 1949-1973. There are a number of different subcommittees under the Friends Peace Committee that work on different facets of peacekeeping, including international issues, the role of the military in schools and society, and effecting legislative change.

Eugene M. Lang papers, 1919-2012 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Eugene M. Lang (1919-2017) was an American businessman and philanthropist, known for founding an innovative intellectual property firm and for his support of higher education. A 1938 graduate of Swarthmore College, Lang served on the Board of Managers for decades and was one of its most generous donors. This collection consists primarily of letters between Eugene M. Lang and his wife Theresa, from 1944 (shortly before their marriage) into the 1960s, while Eugene was travelling extensively internationally for business; as well as the text of speeches given by Eugene Lang from 1970 into the early 2010s. There are also a large number of letters between Eugene and his parents while he was a student at Swarthmore College, 1934-1938, and coursework from Swarthmore classes. The collection contains some additional correspondence and a small amount of other material, including drawings by Eugene, newspaper clippings, a few photographs, and other documents. There are also 6 reels of 8-mm film.

Abstract:
Horace Mather Lippincott (1877-1967) was a Quaker editor and historian. The collection contains his speeches and writings on topics primarily concerning the Society of Friends and the history of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Of particular interest is the scrapbook he compiled in 1946 of papers and photographs of the 1913-1914 Joint Group which met weekly to study the Separation in the Society of Friends, along with other papers on the topic and on the first joint meeting of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings in 1946. The collection includes genealogical research by Horace Mather Lippincott and his brother George E. Lippincott, deeds, and some family papers.

Abstract:
Alice C. Paxson Hadley (1857-1919) was the daughter of Frederick and Lydia Betts Paxson, Philadelphia Hicksite Quakers. She was a founding member of the Thread and Needle Society, a social and charitable club of young Friends. Alice kept a diary that recorded events and meetings of the group 1873 to 1880 which were transcribed by her granddaughter, and she collected memorabilia and speeches she presented.

Abstract:
Robert "Tiny" Maxwell (1884-1922) was an influential college and professional football player who attended Swarthmore College from 1904-1906. In 1984, Ralph Keyes wrote an article about Maxwell for Sports Illustrated. This collection consists primarily of photocopied newspaper clippings and other research materials assembled by Ralph Keyes for his article. Of special note are a small collection of original photographs of Tiny Maxwell, from his boyhood, through his football years, and adulthood.

Larry Scott Butler is a Quaker activist who was involved in civil rights work in Alabama in 1965 and was a leader in the gay rights movement in the 1970s and 1980s. The collection contains correspondence, photographs, and the diary he kept while participating in the SCOPE project, Barbour County, Alabama, which was sponsored by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The collection includes minutes and remarks on the early history of the Committee on Homosexuality of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and biographical material.

Abstract:
Settled by Quakers beginning in 1680, the small town of Langhorne in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, grew as an important transportation center between Trenton and Philadelphia due to its location at the intersection of major roads connecting the two cities. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the town, which served as a stop along the rail line, became a popular summer vacation destination for wealthy Philadelphians. The Historic Langhorne Association photograph and photo postcard collection, circa 1867-2012 contains photographs, postcards, negatives, and oversized images that document the people, buildings, events, and streets of Langhorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania and the surrounding area from the mid-19th century until the present.

Ray (Raymond) Wall is a Republican public servant in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He has served as Bensalem Treasurer (formerly known as Tax Collector) continuously since 1985, and is still in office as of 2013. He is also very involved in the local Republican party, serving as Republican Committeeman for 20 years. The Ray Wall papers, 1986-2009, include Tax Collector Files relating to Wall's work as tax collector and treasurer and Political Papers relating to local elections and Wall's role in the Republican Party.

Globe Dye Works, established in 1865 by Richard Greenwood and William Bault, was a textile dying plant located in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania specializing in the bleaching and dying of yard and thread. The plant was owned and operated by the Greenwood family until its closure in 2005. The Globe Dye Works records, 1865-2005, consist of financial and administrative records, employee records, board and stockholder meeting minutes, maps, scrapbooks, photographs, photograph albums, property documents relating to the ownership and sales of the Globe Dye Works and Greenwood family properties, and other materials.

The Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is located in the lower northeast section of the city and is bordered by the Frankford Creek on the south, Castor Avenue on the west, Cheltenham Avenue on the north, and roughly the I-95 expressway on the east. Originally a village, Frankford was incorporated as a borough in 1800 and was later absorbed into the City of Philadelphia in the 1854 Philadelphia city/county consolidation. Historic Yellow Springs is a non-profit organization in Chester County, Pennsylvania that preserves and promotes the history and arts of Yellow Springs village. The village was the site of 18th and 19th century spas; the first military hospital in North America, built during the Revolutionary War; an orphan school for children of Civil War Soldiers; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)'s Country School; Good News Productions, the film studio that created The Blob; and Chester Springs Studio, a vibrant arts center that merged with Historic Yellow Springs in 2007. The Historic Yellow Springs collection, 1823-2013, is a combination of original records and collected secondary-source materials about the several organizations that have occupied the village of Historic Yellow Springs over its long history from 1722 into the 21st century.

The township of Lower Merion in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania was first settled by Welsh Quakers in 1682. The Autocar Company was founded as a manufacturer of commercial passenger vehicles circa 1897 in Pittsburgh and moved to Ardmore, Pennsylvania in 1900. During the first and second World Wars, the company focused on producing military vehicles. The company was still in operation as of 2011, although it was owned by Volvo and no longer located in Ardmore. The Lower Merion Historical Society Autocar Company ephemera collection, 1912-2011, is composed of photographs and ephemera relating to the Autocar Company. It includes photographs, brochures, advertisements, department memos, employee handbooks, newsletters, and newspaper articles.

In the 17th century, Welsh immigrants settled in the area that would later be known as Malvern, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Originally part of Willistown Township as a village called West Chester Intersection, the village was renamed Malvern in 1873 and incorporated in 1889 as the Borough of Malvern, formally separating it from Willistown Township. As of 2015, the Borough of Malvern remains a small town with a railway station and a variety of cultural and civic organizations, and as a result of recent revitalization efforts, boasts a wide assortment of local shops in its business district.
