This is a finding aid. It is a description of archival material held at the Quaker Meeting Records at Haverford College Quaker & Special Collections and Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. Unless otherwise noted, the materials described below are physically available in their reading room, and not digitally available through the web.

Overview and metadata sections

Sadsbury Monthly Meeting was established by Chester [Concord] Quarterly Meeting out of New Garden Monthly Meeting in 1737. Its opening session was held in Twelfth Month 1737/1738. In 1758, the monthly meeting was transferred to Western Quarterly Meeting; and in 1800, it became part of Caln Quarterly Meeting. At the time of the Hicksite Separation, two branches of this monthly meeting emerged.

Sadsbury Monthly Meeting (Orthodox) held its sessions in Simmonstown from 1831 to 1881; it returned to Christiana in 1881. The meeting was discontinued in 1907, and its members were attached to Bradford Monthly Meeting. The Hicksite monthly meeting, which reunited with Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox) in 1955, was the forerunner of the current Sadsbury Monthly Meeting.

Scope and Contents

Printed epistle sent to Chesterfield Monthly Meeting by a joint men's/women's committee at Sadsbury to "join with us in the inquiiry, how far the testimony of our Society against Slavery has been of that vital, progressive character that always produces an influence in the community at large, seeing that the evil has been steadily increasing."

The Sadsbury committee felt called to address other meetings on the occasion of the Mexican War and its atrocities.
