Overview and metadata sections
Swarthmore College is a private liberal arts college in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Established by Hicksite Quakers in 1864, it was one of the first coeducational colleges in the United States.
This collection consists of original and photocopied clippings from newspapers and other publications covering topics relating to Swarthmore College, its students, faculty, and administrators. The collection is organized into three series: I. Clippings by date; II. Clippings by subject; and III. Clippings by title or topic.
Series I. Clippings by date, 1862-2006, is by far the largest series in this collection. Occassionally, there are files pertaining to specific topics within a time period, whether events like the Swarthmore College Centennial, or topics like baseball or societies & clubs. Early clippings are pasted into scrapbooks, but later clippings are loose.
Series II. Clippings by subject, circa 1980-2005, is the second largest series in the collection. See also RG6/V General Reference Files.
Series III. Clippings by title or topic, circa 1985-2011, is subdivided into newspapers (alphabetical by title), magazines (alphabetical by title), national publicity (chronological by year), and ratings & rankings (eg. US News and World Report ranking of top colleges; chronological by year).
This collection is organized into three series: I. Clippings by date; II. Clippings by subject; III. Clippings by title or topic.
The Swarthmore College Public Relations Office, and predecessor and successor deparments including the Communications Office, maintained files of clippings about the college. Clippings were transferred to the Friends Historical Library in batches and added to the collection.
