Abstract:

In the 17th century, Welsh immigrants settled in the area that would later be known as Malvern, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Originally part of Willistown Township as a village called West Chester Intersection, the village was renamed Malvern in 1873 and incorporated in 1889 as the Borough of Malvern, formally separating it from Willistown Township. As of 2015, the Borough of Malvern remains a small town with a railway station and a variety of cultural and civic organizations, and as a result of recent revitalization efforts, boasts a wide assortment of local shops in its business district. The Malvern Historical Commission photographs, slides, and negatives, 1954-2012 (bulk 2001-2012), consist of photographs, slides, and negatives pertaining to people, organizations, and events in Malvern, taken primarily by members of the Malvern Historical Commission.

In the 17th century, Welsh immigrants settled in the area that would later be known as Malvern, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Originally part of Willistown Township as a village called West Chester Intersection, Malvern was the site of the Battle of Paoli in 1777, which took place during the American Revolution. This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 as the Paoli Battlefield Site and Parade Grounds. In 1873, when the Pennsylvania Railroad laid its tracks through the village, it was renamed Malvern. Economic development in the small village led residents to officially incorporate in 1889 as the Borough of Malvern, separating it from Willistown Township. Following incorporation, the Borough of Malvern continued to grow, including the creation of the Malvern Fire Company, the Malvern water system, and other organizations. As of 2015, the Borough of Malvern remains a small town with a railway station and a variety of cultural and civic organizations, and as a result of recent revitalization efforts, boasts a wide assortment of local shops in its business district.

This collection consists of photographs, slides, and negatives pertaining to people, organizations, and events in Malvern taken primarily by members of the Malvern Historical Commission. A majority of the photographs are from 2001 to 2004, but there is a small number of prints from 1954 to the 1990s. Some of these photographs pre-date the Malvern Historical Commission.

The photographs are organized into four categories: people (organized alphabetically by name), location (organized alphabetically by property), organizations (organized alphabetically), and events (organized chronologically). The photographs are a mix of color and black and white prints, and the majority of them are marked with the photographer's name, location, and date. There is a small amount of labeled color slides, circa 1970s-1990s.

There is a section of negatives, organized chronologically. Negatives are labeled by subject, and many of them correspond to photographic prints in the collection.
