Abstract:

Salem Monthly Meeting was established in 1676. It became part of Salem Quarterly Meeting in 1682. In 1827, after the Hicksite Separation in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, the meeting split into Hicksite and Orthodox branches. In 1955, after the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings reunited, there remained two Salem Monthly Meetings. Salem Monthly Meeting at Woodstown, the former Orthodox meeting, was discontinued in 1977. Salem Monthly Meeting at Salem, the former Hicksite meeting, is currently an active monthly meeting.

Records of Salem Monthly Meeting, 1675-2015, including Pre-Separation, Hicksite, Orthodox, and both Salem (United) and Salem at Woodstown (United). Files include: men's and joint meeting minutes, vital records, women's minutes, Ministers and Elders' minutes, manuscript copies of men's minutes, miscellaneous papers, property records, treasurer's reports, and newsletters. Some minutes and finanical records are digital; files are accessible to TriCollege accounts or on-campus users.

Deposit

Additional records were deposited in 1964 by Salem Quarterly Meeting that relate to 17th and 18th century activity at Salem Monthly Meeting. That deposit includes vital records related to membership transfers, discipline, and marriage as well as early property records about the land and meetinghouse at Salem. All records deposited by Salem Quarterly Meeting are described in that collection (QM-Ph-S270).
