Abstract:: The Deanery was the home of the first Dean and second President of Bryn Mawr College, M. Carey Thomas, from 1885 to 1933. From 1933 until 1968, when the building was demolished for the construction of Canaday Library, the building served as the college's Alumnae Center and Inn. The collection is comprised primarily of Deanery records, mostly inventories of the building, and the files of Carol Campbell, Curator of Art and Artifacts in Bryn Mawr College's Special Collections

Batcheler, Hartshorne, and Sahlin families papers, 1789-2007 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains the papers of the Batcheler, Hartshorne, and Sahlin families, descended from Axel (1826-March 5, 1909) and Axeline Sahlin (1834-1922), a Swedish couple whose children lived in Europe and the United States. Four generations of the family are documented here, with documentation centering around five families. In the United States, the family is represented by Gertrude Chandler (July 17, 1860-1953) and Axel Sahlin (1855-1937); their daughter Ellen Sahlin (February 21, 1895-June 4, 1988) and her husband, Judge Richard Hartshorne (February 29, 1888-September 19,1975); and their daughter, Penelope Hartshorne (1928-2007) and her husband, George Batcheler(1926-2009). The Swedish side of the family is represented by Axel and Axeline Sahlin and the family of their daughter, Essie Sahlin (1859-1950) and her husband, Simon Johannes Boëthius (1850-1924). Ronald M. Surak papers, 1949, 1961-2010, undated

Abstract:: Ronald M. Surak (1940-2011) was a musician and music teacher from Shamokin, Pennsylvania. He specialized in composition, was particularly interested in computer-generated music, and created several works that combined traditional instruments with electronic music. He taught at the Wilmington Music School in Delaware and Rutgers University at both New Brunswick and Camden in New Jersey. Additionally, he served a director of the Rutgers Center for Computer and Experimental Music. This collection of Surak's papers is comprised mostly of his musical compositions and spans the second half of the twentieth century. In addition to musical scores, there are also programs (for his own performances and performances of his works by others), flyers, clippings, personal notes, and ephemera. There is also a significant group of audio and video recordings of his work on cassettes, CDs, and computer discs.

Abstract:: The Junior League of Philadelphia, Inc. founded 1912, is an organization of women devoted to volunteerism and community improvement. It was initially established to help create settlement houses in Philadelphia. However, over time, the group became involved with a large number of causes, from war relief to children's care, and today continues its legacy of city-wide community involvement. The Junior League celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2012 and remains highly active in the Philadelphia community. The Junior League of Philadelphia records constitute the institutional records of this organization. The collection dates from 1912 to 2009, with bulk dates of 1955 to 1998, and contains board and committee meeting minutes, newsletters, member directories, and annual reports. These materials provide an excellent depiction of the governance of the organization as well as member lists and highlighted events and activities.

Samuel Bufford papers, 1980-2010 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Honorable Samuel L. Bufford is a former United States Bankruptcy Judge in the Central District of California, where he served from 1985 to 2010 and presided over nearly 100,000 cases. After graduating with a B.A. from Wheaton College in Illinois, Judge Bufford earned his law degree from the University of Michigan, where he was an editor of the Michigan Law Review and of the Journal of Law Reform and a Ph.D in Philosophy from the University of Texas. He practiced corporate, bankruptcy, antitrust, securities, and other types of business law in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, and New York between 1974 and his appointment to the bench, except for a stint teaching law and urban planning at The Ohio State University between 1975 and 1977. A scholar of U.S. and comparative insolvency law, Bufford has authored one book, United States International Insolvency Law (Oxford University Press, 2009), and numerous law review articles and more than 75 published opinions. Abstract:: This collection of papers contains documents from Judge A. Thomas Small's office between the years 1982 and 2009. Documents include correspondence, handwritten notes, research material, testimonies and drafted legislation. Small actively participated in the legislative process, and much of the collecion covers legislative issues such as the Marathon decision, the creation of Chapter 12 bankruptcy, the creation of Bankruptcy Appellate Panels, and the debate over Bankruptcy Administrators vs. Bankruptcy Trustees. Also included are papers documenting the long range planning process of the United States Judicial Conference and the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges.

Judge Joyce Bihary papers, 1999-2009 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Judge Bihary received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School in 1975. From 1987-2003, she served as a judge for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Northern District of Georgia. In 2003, Judge Bihary was sworn in as Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Northern District of Georgia. She served this position from 2003 until her retirement in May of 2012. The Judge Joyce Bihary Papers, 1999-2009, includes materials created, collected, and received by Judge Bihary from two periods of her career. First, materials from the 1999 Debtor Education Program in Atlanta, Georgia which contains information regarding American bankruptcy in the mid to late 1990's. Second, the collection includes information regarding the proposed mortgage "cramdown" legislation specifically referencing H.R. 1106 during 2008-2009. Abstract:: Randall J. Newsome attended Boston University for his Bachelor of Arts in 1972 and the University of Cincinnati College of Law for his Juris Doctor in 1975. With 28 years of experience serving as a settlement and bankruptcy judge, Judge Newsome is best known for his intelligent and pragmatic approach to resolving complex matters and he is frequently sought out as a national speaker on topics related to bankruptcy. Judge Newsome devoted much of his career handling local and national bankruptcy issues. Not only was Judge Newsome vocal about bankruptcy reform for consumers, but he was also actively involved with the ongoing legislative battles over bankruptcy reform, particularly during the ever changing Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) in the late 1990s. Abstract:: Deborah A. DeMott completed her B.A. in 1970 from Swarthmore College and received her Juris Doctorate from New York University in 1973. DeMott spent her early years in DuBois, Pennsylvania. She served as articles editor of the New York University Law Review. DeMott began her professional career with a judicial clerkship in a federal court in New York City, and later practiced with a large law firm in that city, until she joined the Duke law faculty in 1975. In 1989, she received the Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award from Duke University. Professor DeMott served as the Reporter for the American Law Institute's Restatement (Third) of Agency, published in 2006. This collection includes materials such as correspondence, financial material, notes, printed materials, and council and preliminary drafts of the Restatement of the Law Third.

Abstract:: The Judge Joe Lee papers, 1961-2012, consist of material from Lee's active involvement in bankruptcy organizations and legislation. Joe Lee received his law degree from the University of Kentucky in 1955. He served as counsel to the Congressional Labor Subcommittee for the U.S. House of Representatives before being appointed a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge on September 1, 1961. He was one of the longest serving bankruptcy judges in the nation and played a pivotal role in the enactment of the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978. The collection includes correspondence, minutes, and reports from the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, drafts of bills and correspondence regarding bankruptcy legislation, and Lee's writings on the history of bankruptcy law.
