Architecture Prints Collection, unknown (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection contains a wide range of print materials related to architectural study and illustration. Mostly from the 19th century, these prints were most likely used as illustrations in bound or grouped collections, for study prints of architectural styles, or for leisure as keepsakes or collectable of particular places. Most of the collection contains prints of churches, ruins, and chateaus in Europe (mostly France). Although this is the bulk of the material, there are also a number of blueprints, and prints from America. The prints are mostly lithographs, but there are also several engravings. This collection would be useful for research related to architectural illustration, 19th century tourism, and 19th century print culture.

Abstract:
Approximately 60 black and white photographs comprise this collection, documenting the work of Hollingsworth Pearce (1878-1936), Philadelphia designer, metalsmith and engraver. There is also a hand-written inventory of the photographed objects, which are primarily silver or pewter items Pearce crafted for several churches and chapels, such as altar and processional crosses, sanctuary lamps and a baptismal bowl. Tablets, trophy cups and bowls are also illustrated.

Chemical Heritage Foundation instrumentation manual collection: Advertising materials, undated

Abstract:
These materials may be reprints of scholarly articles, or reports, or data sheets. The advertising material also varies in intent. Material designated as technical advertising is more theoretical in nature and directed toward end-users of the product. Trade advertising is more general in nature. Colorful and filled with superlatives, it was clearly aimed at administrators and purchasing personnel. The ads are filed by company name in a filing cabinet system. Some of this material is accompanied by correspondence which usually relates to issues of pricing or product improvement. Some of the files originally contained photographs of the equipment. These photographs were provided by the manufacturers for publicity purposes. They have been removed during processing and will now be found in the image archives.

Francis R. Kirkham Law Clerk papers, circa 1935-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Francis Kirkham (1904-1996) was born in Utah in 1904. After earning his undergraduate and law degrees from George Washington University, Kirkham clerked for two Supreme Court Justices, including former Chief Justice Evan Hughes. During his time as a law clerk, Kirkham drafted a report suggesting revisions to the way people filed for bankruptcy, which was a pertinent issue in the wake of the Great Depression. This report, "Suggested Revisions to the General Orders and Forms of Bankruptcy," was published in 1939. The collection, circa 1935-1939, includes correspondence with Supreme Court Justices, drafts, reports, National Bankruptcy Conference drafts, and related material regarding Kirkham's activity as a Supreme Court law clerk drafting the "General Order and Rules of Bankruptcy," which was published in 1939.

Abstract:
The Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is located in the lower northeast section of the city and is bordered by the Frankford Creek on the south, Castor Avenue on the west, Cheltenham Avenue on the north, and roughly the I-95 expressway on the east. Originally a village, Frankford was incorporated as a borough in 1800 and was later absorbed into the City of Philadelphia in the 1854 Philadelphia city/county consolidation. As of 2015, Frankford is a working-class neighborhood with a diverse population, including a large number of African Americans, Asian Americans, Polish Americans, Italian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and West Indian Americans. Thomas Fisher (1801-1856) was a Quaker poet, a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences, and the author of books on science and mathematics. This collection is comprised of his single volume signature album. The note on the inside cover reads: "The undersigned have examined Mr. Thomas Fisher's Diagrams for Generalizing and Simplifying Mathematical Principles; and believing them to be Novel and useful, subscribe in order to promote their publication." In Thomas Clarkson's manuscript "The History of the Rise, Progress, and Accomplishment of the Abolition of the African Slave Trade," he describes the Quaker influence in the abolitionist movement in Britain and the parliamentary debates leading to the Slave Trade Act of 1807. The manuscript describes both the arguments in support and in opposition to abolition, and the actions of the members of the abolition movement. Volume 1 contains the early history of the abolition movement until July, 1788, and volume two describes the abolition movement from 1789 to 1808. The manuscript includes edits throughout.

Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985) was a Hungarian-born violinist and conductor best known for his association with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Ormandy's characteristic conducting style resulted in the "Philadelphia Sound," which he brought around the world through recordings, international tours, and guest conducting engagements. This collection contains test pressings and private recordings, mostly of Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Miscellaneous papers of Marion Dexter Learned related to his scholarly work and academic career. Most of the items, including manuscript fragments, notes, and research materials, pertain to an unfinished scholarly project in which Learned sought to illuminate the literary evolution of the Wilhelm Tell legend and ballad, from its beginnings to the publication of a version of the ballad in Philadelphia in 1768 by the German-born printer Heinrich Miller. Other items in the collection include miscellaneous correspondence; two personal documents of Learned from graduate study in Leipzig, Germany; print copies of two speeches by him; and miscellaneous research materials and publications collected by him.

Abstract:
Following Indian independence in 1947, the British and Indian armies agreed to divide the Gurkha regiments between the two armies. British, Indian, and Nepalese delegations met in Nepal from July 1947 to January 1948 in order to discuss the terms of service of the Gurkha soldier as well as specific rights granted to them in relation to religion, rates of pay, performance and conduct, and leave from duty. This photograph album, containing 90 photographs, documents the three delegations' tour through Nepal. The images, probably created by a British delegate of the Mission, are labeled and the album includes photographs of people, landscapes, and historical and religious sites.

The William H. Helfand collection of medical quackery ephemera contains prints that address the public perception of physicians and the practice of medicine across three centuries (1736-2006, with undated materials). A large number of cartoons from nineteenth century French satirical newspapers reveal that medical practices and symbols were used to visually express political sentiments. In this collection, medicine also emerges as a theme in imagerie populaire, inexpensive block prints mass-produced during the same period. Other aspects and eras of medicine are represented in the collection's portraits, advertisements, devotional images and artwork.
