Abstract:

Robert Barclay's "Apology for the True Christian Divinity," translated into French by Georges Liens, summarizes the early Quaker theological concerns of the beliefs of Friends as Barclay heard them preached by George Fox and other influential Friends.

Robert Barclay (1648-1690) was born in 1648, in Gordonstown, Scotland, the son of Colonel David Barclay of Ury and Katherine Gourdon. He was educated at Scots College, Paris, and returned to Scotland in 1664. Barclay joined the Society of Friends in 1666. He married Christian Molleson in 1669, and the couple had seven children. In 1672, he was imprisoned at Montrosa, and was again imprisoned in 1676, this time in Talbooth prison, Aberdeen. Barclay's "Apology for the True Christian Divinity" was first published in Latin in 1676, and then in English in 1678. In 1677, Barclay went to Holland with George Keith, George Fox, and William Penn. Robert Barclay died after catching a fever in 1690, at his home in Ury.
